Hello, i'm new at knifes (i don't even own one yet). I started looking into balisongs but unfortunately they are illegal to own/carry/sell/buy where i live.
So i thought I'd rather buy a folding knife, i'm a poor student and can't afford a super high tech military knife. My budget is 60€ ($80). So what am i looking into?
I like the design of Spyderco knifes the best but i'm basically open to anything as long as it's awesome considering my budget. I'd be needing it for tasks like opening packages or for emergency situations or just really any situation i would be needing a knife.
Most important should be durability. I won't be buying another knife for a loooong time so it should be durable.

Some knifes i was looking in to:
Kershaw Skyline and Spyderco Tenacious because people were saying they were good but maybe there are better knifes around for 60€?
I'm curious about the Spyderco salt series with the H1 blades because they seem to be quite sturdy.
Again this is just to give you guys a general idea. It could be any knife as long as it's the best for that price point.

Hey, welcome!

You are looking in the right direction, Spyderco and Kershaw are probably the best knives you can buy in your price range. You certainly will not be disappointed with either the Spyderco Tenacious or Kershaw Skyline!

My recommendation would be to try and find a knife shop and actually take some models in your hand, see what feels good and comfortable for you.

Also, experiment with the opening mechanisms. For me, the hole works much better than a stud, but for others the reverse is true.

You may also want to look into a swiss army knife that has a locking, 'spyderco' style blade.

Let us know what you decide on!

Though not a folder I think the esee izula or izula II would make a great first knife. And the warranty is second to none. But I doubt you'll need it.

I'm not sure in what country you live, so I don't know what $80 will buy there.

The Spyderco Delica is a great knife that everyone likes. For many, it is all the knife they ever need. It is my best recommendation if you want a one-hand opener. It runs about $55 online in the US. Flat and inconspicuous in the pocket. Comfortable in the hand. Excellent blade steel that takes and holds a keen edge.

The Benchmade Griptilian can be found in that price range. I enjoy using mine.

in addition to the above choices, i like the cold steel lawman and recon series. both the small and large can be bought for under $80 here.

Since you specify your price in Euro, I will offer a suggestion with a European price. You may get a better deal on ebay (for example on a Delica or Endura), but consider shipping and possible customs involvement. The benefit of self-importing is more evident with more expensive knives as then the shipping cost becomes a minor part of the total cost.

The liner-locking Tenacious was already mentioned, and I think that its backlocking sister model, the new flat-ground Byrd Cara Cara G10 is even more impressive, and at 45 euro, it's really affordable by European knife price standards. A very sturdy backlock with great ergonomy, and offering you the right feeling of awesomeness. Rather incredible for the price, in fact.

hello, i apologise for the currency confusion. I wasn't aware that the knives are so cheap over there. i guess it makes sense because most of them are from american companies.

To give you an idea of how much knives cost over here (im from germany btw) i give a quick rundown of the knives that have been mentioned in this thread

Spyderco Tenacious are around 50€ (that's around $65)
Kershaw Skyline are also around 50€
esee izula around 60€ ($80)
Spyderco Delica4 80€ ($105)
Benchmade Griptilian 90-100€ ($118-130)
Cold Steel Lawman 80€
Spyderco Cara Cara G10 45€ (as it has been linked, are you from germany, Dagon?)

So you can see the prices are a bit more hefty.
I have narrowed it down on a Spyderco but i'm not yet sure which one specific. i like the Tenacious but i'm not too fond on the blade. I'd rather have a VG-10 blade to be honest. because i won't be able to sharpen the blade very often the tenacious steel is not very durable for me.

While the Delica is cheaper, i'm really fond of the blade size and shape of the 2010 endura FG. Although it's 20€ over my budget i think it could be more worth it than a tenacious on the long run.
What do yall think of the Endura?

I also spend € instead of $ :D

US made knives can get quite expensive here in Europe.
My solution? eBay. I got a Benchmade Mini-Griptilian and a SOG Visionary I for apox. 65€ each.

Spyderco Cara Cara G10 45€ (as it has been linked, are you from germany, Dagon?)

Endura is great. Delica as well. Both are good excellent utilitarian EDC knives.
Still, I would have another look at the Cara Cara G10 - it will feel more expensive, more awesome in the hand than an FRN-handled Delica or Endura. It's true that the Cara Cara's midrange steel is a notch below the VG-10 of the Delica or Endura, but it is still pretty usable.

FYI: NONE of these knives can be legally carried in Germany. In short and probably oversimplified:
- One hand opening is only ok if not locking
- Two hand opening knives can lock.

This is why Böker has a number of "42" knives, referring to the German knife law, and these are knives modified or designed for two hand opening.

Within your original budget, have a look at the Böker Plus 3000 Lightweight, which is awesome and modern and legal to carry. If you're interested, HERE is my video review about it...

For one hand opening, this Spyderco UK Pen Knife Lightweight is just within your budget and legal to carry (it doesn't lock). It is a nice EDC knife. The high end UKPK with s30V steel costs more than the double and the slightly smaller yet lovely Wharncliffe Urban with VG10 blade costs the double. All these are legal to carry.

BTW, I'm from Belgium

I don't understand your crazy moon money ( :D ) but I'm pretty sure you can get a KaBar Dozier folder in that price range. I have one and love it.

Once you put a convex edge on it, its just crazy how well it holds an edge.
Actually for the $, you can get 2.

just an update for you guys. I found a shop were i could buy balisongs. so i just ordered two balisongs for 70€ ($92). granted they are not of good quality (from Herbertz) and they might not arrive. at least it's cash on delivery so if they're not coming i will probably buy an Endura 4 FFG. I know what you guys are thinking ''that dude is buying a crappy thing while he could get something nice instead''.
But you should understand that the reason i got into knives in the first place was because of Balisongs, so now the opportunity arrived and i grabbed it.
I still appreciate your help and i'll be an avid reader of this forum. thanks.

Well, I hope you'll be happy with it. I tend to avoid Herbertz like ebola victims with open wounds...

American forum members may not know Herbertz. It is a large European knife distributor. They don't make knives, yet they also have their own brand which for the most is outsourced cheap chinese stuff. Not cheap and cheerful chinese knives, like Sanrenmu, but cheap and nasty. Something you immediately notice when you see them in, for example, a European outdoor sports shop. They irradiate mediocrity.
Not to mention that Balisongs are not legal to carry in Germany.
Indeed, for less money you could have had the legal to carry and well performing Spyderco UKPK Lightweight, or for only a bit more the not legal to carry Delica or Endura which are high performers.

Agree wholeheartedly with Dagon, balisongs are fun but Herbertz is pretty much junk... of course, it's your money but I would go with one of the UK pen knives from Spyderco... Well-built and pretty cheap. If you still have some money left over (and want to buy something that you can legally carry) I would buy one of those. Hope your butterfly knives last more than a couple of days :)
