Hi all,
My wife is sick of knives. Said she would buy me one for my summer birthday(55). I set a price at around $250. I don't own any near that price. I chose that because that is the price of a Karambit Folder in "TK" Magazine. Since I can choose only one knife. Help me make the best choice, please. I am partial to folders. Because I like to use my stuff, not just put them in a case and look at them. This is an awesome task, if you should chose to accept it!:D Looking forward to suggestions and computer links.Thank you for your time.
Best,
Prof. Ed:confused:

Do you have any certain task for this knife?
Are you dead set on a folder?
What about several knives that = $250 ?

The suggestions I have for a folder meant to be used are:

Benchmade 921 Switchback (very strong for such a dainty-looking knife and what a solid edge it keeps during stressful tasks like boring through wood). Drawbacks: expensive and the clip chews pockets. Some people think the handle's too smooth.

Spyderco Native in S30V or SS Native in AUS-10. Drawbacks: not as narrow as the 921 and some people don't like resting their index finger on the choil.

Spyderco Delica. 'Nuff said

Spyderco Endura. 'Nuff said

Benchmade 710HS has very useful recurved drop point and M2 steel.
Drawbacks: sharpens easiest with a Sharpmaker

Benchmade 806D2 has the best fit and finish of all Benchmades and isn't the sharpening challenge that the 710HS might be.
Drawbacks: lack of drawbacks may lure prospective buyer that it's too good to be true. Frankly, it'd be an 806M2 to be too good.

Hi Prof. Ed! If it is a folder your after in that price range I suggest you take a look at the newest offering by Cutters Tool & Knife, the Brend Model 2 manual action. Base price is around the $250.00 mark, well actually a little higher at $269.00. This is a heavy duty knife that ought to last several lifetimes and from what I've heard from dealers and folks who have actually bought one they are first class all the way. No corners have been cut to manufacture this knife. You should also know that a Karambit is forthcoming from CK&T also and it is a Reese Weiland design.

You might also consider the new ones from Camillus, especially the Robo-Dominator. Again a titanium handled framelock with a unique assist action. Blade length is 3.60" and these can be preordered from several places. Try www.knifeoutlet.com under Camillus. Says they will ship in May and these run around $160.00 which would leave you some room for a second knife!

Check out www.tadgear.com for a looksee at those Cutter Brends. Also check out www.s4supply.com for the Brends and a price list of the options and a picture of the Karambit.

My latest buy was a MT LCC D/A in S30V. It can be had for under your $250 limit at 1SKS.com or tadgear.com for around $200. It is a sweet knife and it has the cool factor of being a totally stealth auto.

I just got off the phone with Kevin @ 1SKS and now I'm gonna have to buy yet another knife  . Most likely the BM5000 but I'm also leaning toward the BM3550. Decisions decisions :D

What Art said!

I just did a mini review of the Cutters Knife & Tool manual action and it is one kick butt knife.

I would also toss a vote in for the LCC, I have 2 in manual action and they are excellent knives.

But my first choice would still be the CK&T.

May I suggest a used Sebenza? You should be able to find one in your price range if you look around the forums a little bit. If not, I would definately check out that new CK&T karambit, looks awesome.
Have fun,
Matt

Well, if the agreement is that it'll be the last knife for awhile AFTER the knife arrives then I suggest ordering a Randall. It won't arrive till about 4 years from when you order it. Plenty of time in between to buy other knives.

the middleman jack Old Timer at Walmart. Nothing any outdoorsman with reasonable coordination can't do with it. And with the extra $235 you save, you can spend another two days in fishing or hunting camp.

I second soldier's LCC D/A suggestion and while I haven't handled it yet, the Buck/Mayo looks like a winner.

You know, for $250.00 you could get Don Morrow to build you a single blade slipjoint. I know that you picked that number for the Kerambit, and if tactical is your thing, then I'd throw another vote to the Brend, but think about this choice carefully! The great thing about a locking folder is that it locks, and won't close on you. The thing about a Slipjoint is that you may not have a lock, but you can take the thing with you everywhere.

Don is a great guy to do business with (just ask around). You pick the pattern, length, handle material, etc. Its a true custom built to your specs. A GREAT buy for the money. And there's nothing that beats his work with a file. Now, I admit I'm a new customer of Mr. Morrow, but I haven't been the easiest person to deal with (I've never chosen a custom before, and may never get to pick one again), Don has been very good throughout the whole experience. If you could sock away $50.00 more, then you could have a double bladed model. I gotta believe that the most unassuming thing is going to be one of HIS knives. No people to scare, you can take it anywhere, and its a custom that you can be proud of. I beat the hell out of most of my Spydercos, because I can. I don't feel bad about it, that's what they're used for. But if I could humbly put forth Don as a good source for yet another kind of option.

Sorry for the long post!

Sincerely,
Anthony

I just bought that new Darell Ralph/Ryan Wilson Elite Level 1. It is a custom collaberation between the two guys. The knife is finished and assembled buy both guys. It is truly an awesome folder. I have not had a knife yet that matches this knife. The level 1 starts at $275.00 which is a little bit more than you planned for, but you would be very pleased with it. I got mine at www.bladeart.com

Well, my last knife for the time being has to be the BM Griptilian. Spent my cash on a new shotgun so that has to be the last purchase for now. At least until the EO tech sight comes in.

I think the best ideas posted so far are the custom slip joint, the used Sebenza and the Buck/Mayo.
