Mt girlfriend bought me a Kershaw Random Task. I love this blade more than any before it. I could give reasons if you really want to know somewhere down the line.

So here's the deal, my best friend just bought me that same knife from a different store and payed far to much for it. Here's the real deal...I'm going to have about 125 credit at 888knivesrus.com If you look at the site, you will see first that the site is pittifuly designed ( I'm a web designer, I notice..) They also don't carry many of the knives from the brands I do like.

Here's what I got:
-Kershaw Random Task plain edge
-Cold Steel Lrg Voyager, combo edge
-Syderco Native Lightweight, strait edge
-Sperco Harpy, full serations
-Spyderco SS Draagonfly, it's rusting to
crap, I really wish Spydie would stop
using ATS55. I understand that I
also responsible for the life of my
Blade. Wiped it down with Tuff Cloths
wear in the front pocket of my baggy
jeans,and whamo?
- Sorry for the rant
- Old style molded clip endura, that knife has never said NO for any reason.

So now what?
You can guess that I like medium sized, "semi" tactical, but with something distinguishing in the design.

At first I was thinking a Spydie Starmate or Wegner, always seemed to look like pretty heavy-duty all around blades. Another Ken onion would be cool but how many "almost" switchblades can you have. ( I live in DC )

When I first layed eyes on the REKAT Sifu and Hobbitt folder I almost **** my pants. This happend again when I when to check out Szabo and saw those beautiful Perrin tactical wharcliffs

Then I starting thinking....I'm a city person, when am I going to be able to carry around a huge fixed blade, or a giant folder that looks like a campsaw.

Sorry, this is dragging along for too long.

I'm thinking Starmate or wegner. I know there are a lot of you out there who are loyal to other brands. I need everyone's help.

-= Breakdown =-

$125 to spend
-zytex or g10 handles, no steel no inlay
-I really like 440V, but I've been hearing such good things about vg10.
-As for blades, I like anything that is tanto or modified tanto, and I especially LOOOOVVEEE Wharncliffs, oh yeah and hawksbills.

Thank to everyone who I know will post. I'm a relative newcomer here and I've yet to been stepped on or flamed. You all are great! Knife Knuts who are more than happy to help out.

How about a REKAT Pioneer? They are a very stout folder....ATS-34 steel, dual stainless liners, G-10 scales, Rolling-Lock.

There are a couple of them for sale at our "Knives For Sale: Individual" Forum.

Happy hunting!.:).

Hi lesoleilnoir, you might want to check out the Spyderco Howard Viele (the updated version) with VG-10 blade. The blade shape may be to your liking. Imo, it's a gentlemen's folder that is sneaky tactical.

Based on their selection + your criterior, it would definitely be a William Henry Global Series. Wharncliff blade, VG-10, G-10, pocket razor. Model # WH-S07-C

It a very impressive little package, and wickedly sharp.

Hey, I have A Starmate and I like it alot. If you need any info on it or anything, let me know. I live in Bowie, Md just 7 miles from 495 exit 19. E-mail me if you need help deciding on a knife. I know the guys at Knifecenter. They are in Collage Park, and you can shop at the wearhouse. They have everything! :D

i was looking at a starmate in a store and when closed, if i ran my finger along the spine of the blade then onto the handle i could feel the tip, and when went in the opposite direction i could actually feel the tip catch my finger. If this is a common starmate feature i would look elsewhere.

how about a MT kestrel?

I just recieved an Emerson Mini Commander from Discount Knives. It is a very nice knife. The steel is ATS-34, I think. I like the recurved blade and the wave feature (an aid to fast opening). It really isn't much smaller than the regular Commander. The handles are G-10 and the blade has a black coating. You can read about it in the latest issue of Tactical Knives.

Discount Knives has the best price for the Mini Commander I could find - $106 plus some change, and no shipping charges through December 24 for all orders of $100 and over. That is quite a bit less than the price of the regular Commander, and like I said, the Mini is not much smaller.

I prefer the Wegner to the Starmate, but they're both excellent knives. It's too bad they don't seem to carry the Spyderco Mouse, which would give you a short-blade option that's still up to heavy work.

Now I'm thinking maybe a SOG mini X-ray, what do you guys think? Looks pretty nice to me, g10 handles, ATS34 blade... I'm attracted to the full size xray but I need a new EDC and the mini's blade is an even 3".

I don't quite understand some of the features however. According to the web site, this knife has some type of spring assist and an arc lock. Can someone please explain this to me? Is it a speed assist ala Ken Onion -or- a BM axis type lock?

If you guys give it the thumbs up, I think my decision will be made. Thanks again for your help, everyone here is great.

Oh and Happy Holidaze! :D

Although EDI is gone, the GENESIS II was a pretty nice knife. I believe you can still find one for under $100. Good Luck....wolf

Sounds like the Spyderco Wegner is right up your alley.
I recently got a small one (discontinued) and absolutely love it. Size and blade shapr are perfect for an EDC general use knife. Plus, the action is almost as smooth as my Sebenza. Fit and finish are also up to par with the Sebenza. I honestly don't know how Spyderco does it.
If you look hard enough, you can still find the small one. Or, if you prefer a larger blade, the Large Wegner is still in production.
I also have looked at the Viele thru the years. It's just a little too expensive. But, I might break down and buy one eventually.

The STarmate, Wenger, and Harpy are all awesome knives...

IMHO..go with either an axis AFCK or a REKAT PIONEER...some awesome pieces for pretty much any task you can put in front of them...

Axis lock is, IMH, not as reliable...for I have on MANY occasions engaged my mechanism on my 710 while working gloved, while I have NEVER accidently done so on ANY of m y REKATS

Both locks are rock solid though, and I feel that lock strenght plays as major a role as blade steel throughout the life of the knife...

And EDI is the worst...my buddy and I bought a couple at the same time we bought a Military and an M2 AFCk...the damn thing keeps closing on my hand...lock is "S" .

Check out the Strider folders.
They're a bit more expensive than the Spydies, but atleast you'll have a folder that you can go to war with.
Good luck...

An Emerson...or an Emerson...hmm...how about an Emerson?

Mini-CQC7, CQC7 (Waved), Mini-Commander....I could go on and on...

Try one, you'll love it.

Go with the Buck Mini-Strider spearpoint, this knife is nails.I'd buy one tomorrow if I wasn't a southpaw.
