Hello all,

I currently own a Benchmade 335 and a Fallkniven WM1.

The Benchmade is my EDC. I mainly use it to open packages and as money clip. I am happy with it as an EDC.

I purchased the WM1 this past Christmas because I wanted a small, fixed blade and it fits the bill perfectly.

I have a camping trip coming up and would like to purchase a large folder. There are two that I keep coming back to: the Buck 110 and the Spyderco Military.

I am interested in the Buck because it is a classic lockback that can be custom made. The Spyderco interests me because it is a solid liner lock with large handle and lightweight. It also provides fast one handed opening.

Any thoughts on which of these would be better suited for camping? Is the WM1 good enough for camping? It seems a bit small.

Thanks!

Are those the only two you are considering?? Whats your price range?? Is camping your only task you want out of this knife or do you want something that can be an EDC as well?

Those are the two I am considering unless someone has other suggestions. Camping would be the main task. I live in NYC and would rather not carry a large blade. My price range is $100 or less.

The Buck 110 is a fine knife and would serve you well camping, as it has done literally a few generations of men. My Buck 110 is my folder of choice when I go tromping around in the outdoors and don't want to carry a fixed blade. I don't have experience with the Sypderco Military but the Sypderco brand has an excellent reputation.

(As long as you are right-handed), the Spyderco Military is a great choice in a folder. For a very stout folder, the SOG Tomcat or Spyderco Chinook are pretty hard to beat.

For a fixed blade "camp knife", the new Camillus/Becker BK-10 Crewman would be a good choice, and it won't set you back a whole lot of money.

If I had to choose between the two, I would pick the Military over the 110.

Personally, I would take a different approach for a camping trip. I would start with a multi tool like the Swisstool for versatility. I would also take a 3-5” fixed blade. If you feel that your WM is too small, I would suggest a Frosts-Mora Swedish Army knife, which is very well made low cost knife with a 4” blade. If you want something for light weight hiking trips, I would suggest a SAK with a wood saw, such as the Victorinox Hiker model. You can get all three (the Swisstool, the Swedish Army knife and the Hiker) for under $100.

Welcome monk,
You will find that there are a lot of Knifenuts here in NYC. It might take a while to find out who everyone is, but stick around... it's gonna be fun.

One thing I've learned about knives is that with every one I buy, I find something I like about it, and something I don't. This then leads to the next knife I buy. Whenever I'm confronted with an "either/or" decision, I invariably find that I end up buying both knives.

My advice is to get the one that pleases you. Forget about using the knife for camping, self defense, cutting your steak... Get something that you want to play with. A knife that fits in your hand. One that keeps your mind wandering back to that chunk of steel in your pants. You will find that in the future, when you need a knife for camping or self defense, you will realize..."hey, I have this, that and the other knife that would be perfect"

Oh well, back to humping legs...

Given your stated choices I would pick the Military based on it's one handed opening. However, you may be limiting yourself more than you realize. Don't hem yourself in to the point where your selected knife is not able to serve you for any other purpose than camping. To that point, here are a couple of questions that you may want to consider if you have not already done so. Firstly, do NYC and/or NY State have laws limiting blade length for CCW? If the Mili's blade is too long then you rob yourself of a good EDC for situations that the 335 may not be able to address. Secondly, will one knife be sufficient for all the needs that you may encounter in the woods? My suggestion would be to get one knife that is rugged enough (consider a serrated blade)to handle the rough stuff and get a second smaller SAK to handle the more common chores. A good Victorinox can be had for under $30.00 and can come in mighty handy for the more common chores. Enjoy your camping trip.

I think the Buck 110 would serve you well. You say custom made, as in Pete's Custom Knife Shop?

A couple of great under $100 knives for camp would be the Swamp Rat Howling RAt or Bandicoot. For a larger knife for a little more the Camp Tramp is a great knife that could handle all the chores of camp.

just my 2¢

How about the Military (your FB would work), a LM Wave or ST 200 - handiest gadgets ever, and a good axe/hammer combo that carries in a belt sheath...for driving/making tent stakes, chopping wood, etc?

The Buck 110 will serve you well. A small belt axe/hatchet is a very welcome addition on any camping trip. You might also want to look at one of the SAK models with a saw blade, they come in very handy.
