I am a public high school teacher in Claifornia . I finally resolved not to carry any of my BMs to work any more. Legal at last! As I understand it, I can legally have a non-locking blade shorter than 2.5". What should I get? My empty pocket is waiting.

Here's a second on the Spyderco Pride it possesses excellent ergonomics. You may also want to look at a SAK as someone else suggested. I would lean toward a Victorinox as opposed to Wenger. The V'nox soldier may be a good way to go. It was a solid blade and several useful tools as well.

That sucks. I would probably get a swiss army knife.

Get a CRKT KISS or PECK.

Cute lil buggers and the peck can go on a keychain. Kiss would fit right in your pocket and double as a money clip. Hard to argue with that one!

(though something tells me someone will certainly try)

Be careful whatever you carry!

I really like the Spyderco Pride, and don't have any Spydies in my collection. I didn't know they had a non-locking model. Thanks. I've shopped for the CRKTs above before, too. Are they non-locking, though? Do they slide? I'm trying to remember. The SAK Soldier is a good choice. Maybe I'll get 'em all.

They definitely lock.

I apologize. For some reason I got it in my head that you said "non-auto". But looking back, you clearly said non-locking.

Sold on the spyderco yet?

If not, I'll do some digging for some other pics and suggestions.

Also, into traditional folders? ie. slipjoints? multiblades?

This is my honest-to-goodness EDC - even says so in my profile.

I visit schools, public buildings, etc. all the time and it's never been questioned.

Of course, I leave it at home when going into DC.

Were you typing in a hurry or should we be worried?

:D Sorry, had to be a stinker.

A Pride and an SAK

This Opinel #3 has a non-locking blade and costs about $8.

Opinels are the basic pocket knife over in Europe. The pearwood handle is fairly nice and blade is fully flat ground and holds an edge like nobody's business. You can't beat it for price.

Most Opinels have a locking mechanism, but this one does not and has a 2" blade.

If you wanted something really nice you could go with a folding knife made specifically to be smaller sized.

Charles Helton makes beautiful non-locking small folding knives and sells them on eBay under the name: mtn.craft

Here's a pic of a fun one he made:
Lady's Leg Knife (2.5 inches closed)

Did I mention it being Damascus and Ivory...?
(closed at $86)

I say get a small SAK like the Waiter, alox Bantam, the Recruit, or Cadet. SAKs are pretty much universally recognized as non-threatening and the extra tools might be what is needed to convince sheeple of your knife's utilitarian nature.

Well I did misspell my home state, but I'm an English teacher, not a geography teacher. :) I was typing in a hurry because I was typing during a break in class. So maybe you should be worried...

Great advice from all. Thank you.
