What knife to add to my collection?

Hi everyone,

I have been collecting knives for getting close to a year now and have a pretty decent collection. I am still a teenager so the budget is not big but I have tried to avoid buying bulk cheap knives and have focused and saved up for some knives that I consider to be higher end for me personally. Here are a couple pics of my collection so far:

I had a ZT 0350 for a while but sold it off because it was too heavy and bought my PM2 with the funds. I now almost exclusively carry that knife paired with my leatherman squirt and either the SAK alox farmer or cadet.

So, I am wondering what knife would compliment my collection. I don't want a replacement EDC for my PM2 but would like a quality knife that's not too expensive. Here are some of the ones I have been considering.

-Kershaw Cryo
- Kershaw ember (when it comes out)
- Kershaw Shuffle
- Spyderco dragonfly 2
- Spyderco manix 2 (may be a little too much money at this point)
- Spyderco endura (potentially the waved version)
- Ontario rat model 1 (I like the knifeworks exclusive orange color)
- SAK alox pioneer, or alox classic
- Buck 110 hunter (user since I don't want to scratch up my collectable one)
- Mora companion
- Case peanut

What are your opinions?

An Opinel is always a great knife to have in any collection. It looks to me you haven't started modding your knives yet and Opi's are a great entry-knife for doing this too.

When you say modding, do you mean like changing out the scales and clips and such? Also, how do you mod an opinel?

When I say modding I mean modifying your knife in any way shape or form. There are kits out there for some knives, or you could even send it to someone who'll mod it for you. But you can also do some simple yet cool mods yourself(with some basic tools). Here is an interesting thread concerning this: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1141016-DIY-knife-mods-%28Pics-inside%29

With an Opinel there are also a few ways to make it a bit more "your own". Since they have wooden handles all you need is another sharp knife to start sculpting it really. The Carbon versions let you develop also a very nice patina when you know what your doing. But since they are so cheap, it's not really that big of a problem if you screw up.

Here is a project I did with nothing but a Leatherman and some flax seed oil to finish off:

Fun times!

Besides the mora line, what are other good fixed blades. I would be willing to invest like $60 or so in a good fixed blade that would work for camping and outdoors tasks. I wouldn't want it too long (probably no more than about 5 inches) but would want a thick blade that wouldn't bend under abuse and a good grippy handle that could get wet preferably.

You can find a ton of higher priced fixed blades for insanely low prices on the BladeForums Exchange

As you already have some Kershaws, the Knockout in elmax is will not break the bank and has some collector value.. Think about it.

Vote for the Manix and Cryo. But i would HIGHLY recommend getting the G10 Cryo. I have the regular one, and i rarely carry it because its REALLY heavy. Due to the size of the knife and the micro clip, it sags my pocket and i notice it all the time. My Emersons dont bother me much at around the same weight, but the Cryo does. Shame cuz i really like it.

If i could offer an option, check out either a large or small Thermite. I have the large, and like it and carry it quite a bit. Hinderer design like the Cryo. Unfortunately, its also plagued by weight and a stupid small pocket clip. But i personally dont mind it as much.

I have the Manix 2 Lightweight. It is an exceptional knife, but i havent warmed up to it like thought I would. I keep going back to my G10 knives. Functionally, the plastic handles are just as durable, even more so in some ways, than G10, but i have came to terms with the fact that i pretty much hate plastic handles. Otherwise, i HIGHLY recommend this knife. When i get the G10 version it will be in my top 5 list.

Thx for reading this overly long post. Good luck.

This is also a classic model that every serious knifenut should own I think.
