What knife to give?

My brother-in-law is coming in a few weeks for a weekend visit. This is the first time we've seen him in a few years. He's been in Iraq & Afghanistan - 3 tours each. He started out as an MP doing convoy protection then re-up'd and went Force Recon. Needless to say, he has probably had more training than 99.99% of human beings in the world, ever.

I'd like to give him a gift - a Becker of course. But which one? I don't have a nine yet but would get one for him. It is the king after all. Or maybe something that he can actually carry. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance for any help ya'll can give.

You literally couldn't go wrong with any Becker knife. One of the tweeners would be carried for sure.

7 or 9, or if you don't think he would use a big knife, a tweener or a 14.

I would think a BK17 would be about perfect. Big enough to be useful, whether it's working or defending his person......yet small enough to fit nicely on his LBE.

If he likes large blades, then I would go with BK7.

But that's just me, he may love something else, any Becker would suffice. Show him some Becker porn on here and see what he gravitates to.

Becker porn it shall be. I was just looking at the blades they are commonly issued. The kabar is of course a classic with it's 7" blade and the Ontario 3s bayonet comes in at 8". So maybe something a little smaller like a 16 or 17. The 14 is my favorite edc but not sure what he'll think of it.
Anyone think the 5 would be s good fit?

I'd say try to ask him what he'd use it for. Every time someone asks what knife to buy a soldier, the answer is always something smallish and light since it'll only see light duty use. So I'd think a 16 or 11 (since they're the most 'pure' smaller Becker-designed knives in the line). But Murph used his BK-10 for more heavy duty stuff, so in that case I'd think a BK-7. They're on the light side, fast in the hand, but still so damn tough and awesome.

Honestly, I'd give him a BK14. From the sound of things, he's already well prepared for defending himself. Something to comfortably cut an apple (if he can get one) or some chibata bread, might get a lot more use and love. Another thought, is it something he'll be carrying once he's back in the world? A beastly BK9 may be king of the bush, but carrying it in the urban jungle can cause any number of problems. :)

I gave my brother a Kershaw Skyline after he returned, so he'd always have something with him. That was 3 years ago though. Today, I'd give him a BK14 with some laser engraving on it :)

My brother really liked the 16. This is despite me getting him a BK2 before he deployed last time. So I say 16 or 17 would be just about perfect.

Cpurcell - I hadn't thought about it that way. He might use a smaller knife a lot more often and even after he gets out, which may not happen for a long while.

Derek- I didn't know your brother is in the service. What branch?

He is in the Army Natl Guard. Both of them are. Got 'em both BK2's before their third deployments.

I would say, either a BK14, BK16, or BK7, but it really depends on what he needs it for.

The 14 would probably be the most useful on an EDC basis, or at least that's how I see it.

FWIW...
I know we're not talking a deployment knife 'cause it sounds like he's home for good now, but here's a thought.

I offered to "build" any knife I had laying around (lots) for a couple of guys deploying. One is an MP leaving in a couple of weeks. He gravitated toward the synthetic-handled KaBar MK1 over all the Beckers and large KaBars. They just have to carry so much shyt now that anything light is appreciated. When the tweeners came out I was sure to show him all three, and he still went with the MK1, so that is what I built. Desert camo Duracoat blade with Kydex sheath with Molle attachments for his vest.
What I found most interesting is when I asked about the sheath, thinking tan digital camo, he said the NCOs told his unit that they were not allowed to have anything camo on their vests anymore. Black or OD only. I guess the powers-that-be finally woke up to the fact that beyond any distance farther than across a table the ACU looked like pea green.

I could be wrong yet I think most men in FR or other such units would already carry a personal favorite combat/utility knife or one their unit prizes. Weight is also a consideration for units that need to keep moving fast, far, and quietly. I would go with one of the tweeners or even an eleven or fourteen.
