What knives are made in the U.S.A.?

I know that all of the Benchmade knives, other than the Red class, are made in the USA. I also know that Spyderco makes some of their knives in Golden Colorado.

I don't know anything about any of the other knive manufacturers. Does Ka-Bar, Kershaw, CRKT, Emerson, etc....make their knives in the USA?

It might sound crazy but I'm starting to want to just stay with good old USA made folders.

Buck still makes their stuff in the USA right?

Thanks.
:D

Most Bucks are made in the USA. The Buck folders that WalMart sells are imported. You could check the Buck forum for specific model numbers.

Case and Bear are made in the USA.

CRKT are imported, mostly from Tawain I believe.

AG Russell has several models contracted in the USA.

Queen and Camillus are major American knife manufacturers.

Canal Street Cutlery is a new company, making traditional American-made knives.

Good Luck in your quest,
Bob

I guess you'd throw Ontario in there with Queen (they're related). Many Ontario knives are American made.

There's also Kershaw who makes many models in the US. They also make some high quality pieces in Japan (they're owned by a Japanese company) and there are the lower end, value line Kershaws made in China.

The big fixed blade Ka-Bars are still made in America, but some are made overseas.

My preference in American made, but I'll buy Spyderco and Kershaw's Japanese made knives, and Germany is ok in my book as well (as is Switzerland, France and Italy if they're quality knives... SAK, Opinel, et al.). What I try to stay away from is China. I've had good luck with Taiwan-made knives as well.

Cool.

Thanks for the replies. I've had very very good luck with the Spydies I've had made in Seki-City Japan. In fact they have been some of the best.

:)

Emerson has a Japanese-made Hard Wear budget line, but the rest of his knives are made in the US. Strider and Chris Reeve and Busse and Swamp Rat are all made in the US. Ranger and Becker are made in the US.

I found this thread after doing some searching. I was prompted to enquire about USA made knives after reading Ernest Emerson's "The Way I See It".

http://www.emersonknives.com/MyView_index.html

It makes sense to me. It also makes me want to get back to USA made stuff. I'm going to strive to do that. Even if I have to pay a little extra.

I'm going to keep buying my Ford Automobiles too. I still believe in this country.

I can't think of a Seki, Japan knife that has been anything but excellent.

As a buyer, I do research before buying and if it's an excellent value, I'll buy it. I reward excellence with my purchases. Some of that excellence comes from foreign sources.

I buy Ford cars and trucks......you'd be surprised how much of that vehicle is made in foreign lands.

Certain things just are the way they are......and they ain't gonna change.

Sledge, I read Emerson's rant.

Whew. He is no prophet. He needs to stick to making knives.

China is patient. China has enough problems just feeding everybody (which they are doing quite well, considering).

China will get Taiwan peacefully in time (20 years or so) and there will be no hostilities with America.

I believe in supporting American workers by buying American.

I will not, however, boycott other countries because Emerson (with his vested interest) says so.

I see his need to survive. I sympathize to a certain extent. I buy mostly American.......I'll probably buy an Emerson knife one of these days soon--but I also buy where I...........'I' choose.

I reject any criticism from him or anybody else.

I find that fair enough.

A few Ford models are made in Mexico and other countries. Many Nissans, Toyotas, and Hondas are made in the US. Do your research and choose your models wisely if you want a US made car.

And the components?

Shipped in en masse from everywhere you can imagine.

An American made Ford can be 50% non-American. At least American workers get to put them together, that's a plus.

But many have lost their jobs in American factories that used to produce component systems. This is a huge problem and very complex.

I had the opportunity to put together an U.S. made Scallion & a China (?) made Scallion... I don't know about the materials, but you can see the differences in the details, for example: both knives have serrations in the thumb ramp at the base of the blade where it meets the handle, but only the american made has the same serrations pattern on the flipper lever that acts as a finger guard when the knife is open. Maybe i'm "touchy" but since then i ask for buying only american made...

People always say this. What counts is where the money all goes back to.

I don't care if a Honda is made in Ohio, in the end the money goes back to Honda Ltd. in Japan. :)

Exactly. I'll bet that even Emerson -- despite his bluster -- uses imported parts... probably including some from China. It's virtually impossible to get ordinary screws, nuts, bolts, pins, washers etc., that are made in America anymore... unless you're willing to pay for exotic aerospace-grade sort of stuff.

Even a lot of steel is now made in Japan and China is ramping up in that area too.

Tell that to the American workers in Ohio who will lose their jobs to Mexican labor. Honda, Toyota, and Nissan are providing a lot of jobs to people in the US. I could care less that some Japanese Fat Cat is getting rich as long as Americans have jobs.

stevekt,

True.

To tell you the truth my Fords are in the shop a lot more than the one Honda I have. The Honda has better Fit and Finish to boot. It's also not rusting and my Ford is starting to. The Honda is older with more miles. ;)

I love my country and I do value American made products, but I buy the best value for my dollar regardless of where its made.
I have noticed that Seki made Spydercos are has good (some are even better!) has the Golden Colorado Spydercos.

On the car thing.....
I can give an unbiased opinion, I have owned both Fords and Hondas. I actually come from a family that has owned predominatly Fords and GMs. My Honda has MORE American made parts in it than my last Ford, and was built in Ohio by Americans. Those Americans who get paid at Hondas assembly plant in Ohio spend their money in this country too. Buying Honda's and Toyotas gives Americans jobs. More Toyotas and Hondas are built in American than Dodge and alot of GM, which are made in Mexico.
Besides, my Hondas have been MUCH better than that piece of #%&@ Ford I had to drive:thumbdn: My father was always a Ford man too, until he sold his last Ford for a Toyota Tundra crew cab V8. That Toyota is so much better than his Fords.
