What knives do knifemakers use?

Does every maker use his own knives? Or do they use other knives also?

As I'm sure knifemakers aren't narrow minded, its quite possible they appreciate, maybe even use, other makers knives. Just wanted to see if thats the case(or benchmade, spyderco, etc...lol).

Hey! It's a legitimate question....

THANK YOU FOR POSTING A GOOD QUESTION THIS WAS GETTING OUT OF HAND!

Now I couldn't make a knife to save my life so I cannot answer this, but I would LIKE to read the responses to this!

While I'm only a fledgling knife maker (as a hobby), I'm very fond of Spydercos and V-nox SAKs. The Native and Rucksack are my two favorites.

Well I would say that those that wear briefs and drive imports probably use their own and those that wear boxers and drive domestic cars use other peoples knives. Now, if they wear no underwear and drive sports cars they would likely use their's and others and if they wear burlap and drive Ladas they don't use knives at all.
Sorry about that, it's just that I am getting into this car and underwear thing and thought I could combine it with this thread to make things really dull and boring here too.
I don't mean to make light of this topic since I do think that I would be interested in what knife makers have to say about the knives they use.
Good topic Sean.

Keith.

I agree. This is actually an interesting topic. Any knife used by a knife maker would have to be dyn-o-mite because otherwise he would just look at it and say, 'I could do better.' And then he would. I'm only in the middle of making my first knife and I think this sometimes.

I pretty much use the ones that really aren't good enough to put on the table at a show.

There are also those where I am testing a new type of blade steel or grind geometry.

That is a pretty good question. I've seen it here before, but here we go again. I wear a chainsaw chain damascus neck knife and a BM Mini-AFCK clipped to my pants pocket. The chainsaw damascus knife is the first in a line of my new model the 'Scorpion'. I'm wearing it to test the steel and so far, it's some of the best edge holding steel I've used. It's forged if that makes a difference. The pattern in the damascus is unremarkable if not a little plain. The blade is 2 1/2" and total length is 6". I made the kydex sheath too (I'm new at that) and it's part of the test as well.

Here's a link if you're interested in blade geometry or design.

Oh, by the way, my design was inspired by Ray Kirk's 'lil blue neck knife. I have to give him credit because 'lil blue was my everyday carry before I forged the Scorpion.

Carry the first TNT I ever made! It is great. I never have to worry about rust or anything else like that.....NO MATTER WHAT I CUT! once in a great while I put a drop of oil on the pivot.

Believe me, when I say they're not table worthy - they're not table worthy!

Besides that, someone might get a hold of one and post a photo here and say all kinds of bad things about me!

Thought I'd throw this one back up to the top after my Please Stop post. This one could be pretty interesting. I remember reading another one asking custom knife dealers what their daily carry was but I can't remember where I saw it.

Now I carry a plain edge BKC 710 Axis, for some reason it`s the perfect size for me.When it gets dull,I get a new one.I sharpen the old one and pass it on to the next lucky fool.

Hey Bill, I sure would like to hear more from you on these forums. Your knowledge of the Axis lock would be a great topic for the Topic of the Month on the Custom Knife Forum, that Gus is putting together. What do you say?
A shameless plug I know, but it sure would be great.

Keith.

I often carry one of my small Stellite or Talonite fixed blades because I'm often around salt water.
My favorite folders (that I carry) are my NEW Reese Weiland Wasp, Sebenza, LCC, BM 42's and Mil Spec Commander. These are rotated based on my mood or what I might be doing that day

For dress attire, I have a small Simons lockback in a NICE pouch sheath made by Gary Graley.

So Niel...you have one of Reese´s knives...and a Wasp that is...Grrrrrrr I envy you.

At the moment I carry a Spyderco Carbonfiber something I can´t remember. Very, very soon I will be carrying a Terzuola....should arrive in a couple of months.

I'm glad this post got some responses...I was actually interested, not just following the "what do knifemakers..." crowd. this is interesting info.

Geez Jens, you mean you don't carry one of your own knives. They are beautiful and would make a great EDC knife.
I would like to hear more from the knifemakers out there. This, to me, is a very interesting topic.

Keith.

Keith: I do carry my own knives when I am in the woods hunting or whatever. I use my own knives for leatherwork, gardenwork and lots of other stuff. I have my first chiselground tanto as a shopknife (great for cutting rags, debuuring linermaterials etc).

But the main reason I don´t carry one on everyday basis is that in Denmark you can only carry folders in public.

But I am into folders now...so who knows I might be able to get one of my own when they start rolling.
