The lost and found thread had me thinking about all the knives I've owned and what has happened to most of them. After a few minutes of thought I realized that most of the knives I no longer possess I simply gave away to a deserving party. Here's my list; what's yours?

Given Away (including gifts.)

-Husky folding utility knife; given as a small present to a carpenter friend of mine after he remarked how useful it looked. I gave it away mainly because it was not lefty-friendly

-Small CRKT Crawford/Kasper Fighting Folder with the aluminum handles. I really really liked the handle and the blade of this knife but the lack of a reversible pocket clip led me to give it away to my neighbor. He uses it a lot; being a county bumpkin of sorts he spends more time cutting things than pretty much about anything else. He thought the LAWKS was the greatest thing since indoor plumbing.

-Spyderco Rescue 93mm Blue; a gift to my Sous Chef for his birthday. This knife finally made him understand what I meant when I spoke about ergonomics in a pocket knife. I think he lost it though; but that is okay becase this year he received a (see next...)

-Spyderco Native Black; the next gift for my Sous Chef. Apparently the three of us in the kitchen have a weird birthday ritual. Every January when the new catalogs come in we pass them around and the Executive Chef and Sous Chef pick a pocket knife while I pick a new Chef Knife. We only talk about it one day and then when whoever's birthday rolls around they get the item they picked without anybody mentioning it again. Been going for two years running now.

-Spyderco Delica 4 Foliage Green; replacement gift to my Executive Chef since he has been carrying one of those Eagle Industries knock-offs since he got out of the Marine Corps and needed a "real" knife.

-Buck X-tract; this one went to my little sister. I figure it will be handy around her dorms.

-Spyderco Delica 4 X 2; I gave one each to both my older brothers for their birthdays last year.

-Spyderco Native S30V; given to my Oldest brother almost 3 years ago as a work knife. He has run it hard and had the chipping to prove it, but he loves the size and the grind of the knife.

-CRKT Lightfoot M1-03K; replacement for the above Native. I wanted to get something a little different this year and I thought the flipper would set this knife apart.

-AG Russell fruit tester knife; gift to my father as a replacement for his well-worn Schrade Fruit Tester knife. He has been carrying the same model Schrade for almost 40 years! He bought a case of 24 in the early 70s and has gone through about half; using and sharpening them so much they retired ones look like toothpicks.

Benchmade Pika; Sent this one off to my younger brother when he entered highschool as his field knife during his weekend hikes.

*EDIT: -Wusthof Pro Grip Santoku; given to my mother this year for Christmas to replace her ancient Victorinox Classic Chef Knife. She loves the Graton edge and the wide blade.

Received

-Wenger EVO Swiss Army Knife; a Christmas gift. Really was the only good one I got that year. (Boo socks.)

-Victorinox Swiss Rescue; Birthday present this year. I think this is really an awesome piece of gear and I wanted it mainly for the cool factor. Have yet to use it

-CRKT KISS; given to me by my brother when I entered high school. I used it as a money clip for years until I lost it.

-Gerber MP600; my Mother found it at the junkyard whilst taking pictures for insurance reasons. I EDC it to work everyday, I like it.

-Gerber Scout; best friend won this one at cards and gave it to me as a going away present before I left for university.

-Leatherman Wave (broken); given to me by a co-worker who didn't know about Leatherman's warranty. I didn't either for a few years but finally sent it in a received a new one.

-Well-used Benchmade 750 Pinnacle; the "Benchmade Sebenza." The previous owner flicked this knife open quite a bit and it shows. Lock engagement is 100% worn through and there is tons of bladeplay. Not quite sure what to do with this one but still appreciate the thought.

-My Grandfather's Ulster Boy Scout Knife; This is my favorite one. My Grandfather gave me a "permanent loan" of this knife for exploring anytime, anywhere after he noticed all the time I spent wandering about the woods behind his home.

That's all I can think of right now, I will update if anything else occurs to me.

Upon reflection of my list is anyone else a crazy person who gives away knives like candy?

I gave away a beautiful--BEAUTIFUL--Bark River Huntsman with a Big Horn Sheep handle. Just sent it off today--I can't wait to see what my friend thinks.

Once a long while ago, a friend gave me a complete set of damacus folders, first run off production line at Bear Cutlery in Jacksonville AL . They were given to him (owner of knife business) to induce him to handle their knives. He gladly accepted, then later gave them to me as a present. I have to admit, I gave them away in a moment of stoopid to a friend whose son was just starting to collect knives. They moved to another city and I have not seen them since. :barf: :barf:

I've given a few and received a couple, to boot.

Given
- Benchmade 551 in 440C 3 Christmases ago to my step-dad. He still uses this knife hard and it's still going great.
- Buck Pilot? one of their made-in-China, 440C framelocks. Gave it to my step-dad when he had thought he lost the Griptilian.
- Byrd Cara Cara to my uncle 2 Christmases past. He promptly broke about 1/2" off the tip. I still don't believe it just "snapped off while doing normal cutting" as he claims :p

Received
- Benchmade 551 in D2 4 Christmases ago. It is still my EDC.
- Greco Explorer, a large wilderness knife. This was a birthday present 3 years ago and has set a standard for wilderness performance for me  It is my WDC (wilderness daily carry) knife.

I recently gave a Kershaw S30V Leek to a friend as a wedding present, I gave his wife a Spyderco Lava (plus a sharpmaker for both of them). They’re both rednecks (in a non derogatory way) so the knives were well received, though the wife is still not at the stage where she would carry every day. I wouldn’t give just anybody knives like those, I know my buddy has respect for his tools and knows how to make things last.
I also gave a Leatherman Juice to a buddy at collage last year. He promptly lost it a few weeks later.

The only knives I’ve received as presents were garbage, I hate being so honest about it but that’s what they were. Hopefully not too many more people will get the idea of giving me a knife as a gift.

Gave a Buck fixed blade with gut hook to a good hunting buddy. No one else has given me a knife - friends/family aren't 'knife nuts' and don't know what I'd like, I guess. A pearl handled single bladed folder from my father at his death. I had given it to him 30 years ago, while living in Great Britain.

It's a belief in some cultures that giving knives as presents can cause turbulence in relationships that otherwise wouldn't arise. Buying knives for someone, or giving any kind of weapons as gifts can put distance between the giver and receiver. Depending on how they're being offered, and how they're presented makes a huge difference. It's in the same catagory as taking a lava rock home from Hawaii. Superstition or fact?

I have given away and given as gifts MANY knives over the years, and I just can't remember them all.
The ones I have received as gifts are: (I hope I do not forget any one.)
1. Shadow III, and a custom sheath were given to me as gifts by 2 different people. These will stay with me always!
2. 2005 Forum knife. This is permanent in my collection.
3. Special Spin that had special engraving done. This is permanent in my collection.
4. Someone gave me one of the knives that he makes. Permanent.
5. The same person who did #4 also put custom green scales on a D4 for me for free. This is also permanent in my collection.
The spouse has gifted with a few knives over the years too.
Each of these knives is very special to me. I am very blessed!

Most everything that I have given away have been SAKs. I bet I've given away 50 assorted Classics, Signatures and Soldiers over the past year or two. I have also given away a couple of Leeks as presents. To date I have only received one knife as a gift, a Herbertz folder. I would have never bought one due to what I have read about them on the forums, but the thing has turned out to be a surprisingly good knife...

I have given away to mostly deserving folks north of a around 2 thousand dollars worth of knives in the last 10 years alone.. Lord only knows how much in my life time.. :)

What knives I have received in my life worth speaking about on this thread.. not a-hell-uv-a-lot and that ain't no sh#t..:jerkit:

On the other hand, as a young whipper-snapper.. Two good solid hand me down knives I got back when were: One vintage Case XX stockman from my favorite Uncle. And one Camillus Scout knife from an old Hunter/Trapper/Mountain Man-hermit who was a friend of all the good old boys on the mountain top where I grew up back when I was a kid.
