I'd like to make a messenger type bag for my laptop and school books. I'd like the bag to be flexible and soft, but still be strong enough to hold together and protect my laptop. I was thinking of using some 4-5oz latigo, but am not entirely sure that that is the best option. Please let me know what you think. (Hopefully this isn't too off-topic:)) Thanks.

PS: Here is a picture of a bag that I plan on making mine similar to: http://www.dooney.com/OA_HTML/ibeCCtpSctDspRte.jsp?section=14798

I actually messaged that guy earlier today. His work is nothing short of awesome.

Thanks for the link.

For a bag such as you picture and describe I would reccommend vegetable tanned cowhide. The 5/6 ounce leather would be heavy enough and have a certain degree of flexibility such as in a quality briefcase. Wickett & Craig of Curwensville, Pa would be an excellent choice to acquire your leather. It is not inexpensive but it is as good as you will find.
