What leather to use?

I want to make a sheath for my Trail Hawk. I ordered 2 Lbs of genuine cowhide remnants from Etsy and what came in was a bit (much) thinner than what I thought it would be. I have a Husqvarna hatchet that came with an oversize sheath made of thick heavy leather.

Where the heck can I get some of that thick leather?

Leather thickness is gauged by weight in oz. One ounce equals 1/64" in thickness... I'd say 8-9oz is a good weight for most things, though having some 5-6oz or so is nice for smaller knives or other projects that call for thinner material.

As for a place, might wanna check to see if you have a Tandys nearby... if the closest one is too far, just order online

You could cement the thin stuff together. Tandys usually has scraps if you have one near you. I use 8/9 oz and 10 oz for all my sheaths unless i'm doing a two layer rawhide sheath then I use 7 oz veggie with the rawhide laminated over it.

I got some leather about a 1/4 inch thick from Tandy Leather. If you have one in your area sometimes they have a box full of trimming big enough to make what you want and the pieces won't cost to much

Just searched and Tandy's is only 47 mins from my house. I'll go there on monday and snag a couple pieces. Thank you!
