I got an sms from my son this morning about some interesting khukuri story in Malaysian Nespaper Magazine StarMag. I replied his sms to get a copy for me.

Back at home I found out that the front cover of the magazine is a Gurkha picture holding a BAS the one which was sent to me by the late Uncle Bill in his very 1st or maybe the 2nd email to me back about 7 years ago. I think the late Uncle Bill did emailed this spicture to some of us back in 1998 or 1999. Most of the discussion during that time was in The KnifeForums.

Under the picture printed it's topic as 'The Gurkha Mystique'. In one of the paragraph of the article the late Uncle Bill's name was metioned there:
As one knife expert, Bill Martino, at himalayan-imports.com/gurkha.html puts it, “When one grows up using a kukri out of necessity, one learns how to use it well”. He goes on to tell of stories he’s heard of an ordinary farmer, not a soldier, who casually kills a bear with his knife!
After reading then I checked the article in the net and I found it out. Here is the net version of the article. The printed version has more pictures in it.

Thanks Mohd. I remembered the story of the riot being quelled by the unsheathed khukuris. Thanks for the links to the great articles.
It was good to hear Bill's voice again too.

Good article. Thank you, Mohd.

The story Bill told about the bear killed with the khukuri squares with many western reports of bears being killed with a blow to the head from axes, shovels, and hoes. However, I have trouble believing the "casually" part related in the article.
