What lubricant to use on folder

Hi all.

I just got a new Camillus EDC and the paper that came with it mentions that you ought to put a drop of oil on the pivot point of the blade every now and then to keep it moving well.

I'm wondering, what's the best lubricant for folding blades? Should I use an oil, or a spray lubricant like WD40 or (even better) Tri-Flow?

Thanks

I use white lightning, but you can use 3 in 1 oil, and many swear by militec.

I use tuf-glide anymore. You can use white lightening, milltec, gun oil, honing oil, break-free, fishing rod oil, household lubricant, cooking oil, or any type of oil for that matter. with the camillus edc I always used the tufglide, not too messy.

The white lightening is less messy, its a wax lubricant (turns to wax when dry).

I guess the rev just about covered it..... :D

Oh, as info...WD 40 isn't really a lubricant...it is a displacer of moisture and such ( Water Displacement...40th formulation) and it does help remove rust. But not really a "go to" lube.

Cooking oil can become rancid, especially is there are any food-related impurities. If you use your knife on food, I would use something safer, but it will work in a pinch.

Mineral oil is the same consistency and can be had for cheap at any drugstore (it's a laxative in teaspoon amounts - so a drop won't hurt you).

I like tuf-glide though, mostly because the needle dropper bottle is very easy to control. I like white-lightning, but for some reason (the drops are too big) I use too much and pocket lint invades...

Dry powdered graphite works well for opinels (doesn't soak into the wood). I have used it on SAKs and other slippies, as it does not collect lint. Doesn't seem to last as long as oil..

Triflow works good. It used to be recommended by Benchmade until they switched to Miltec. Mineral oil is a good lubricant, but needs more frequent reapplication.

Some others not mentioned yet that I have and use:

Hoppes gun oil - great pinpoint applicator. Also good for flushing crud out of backsprings.
Lubit-8 - Tony Bose was using it at Blade last year so I bought a couple tubes. Also has a pinpoint applicator.
Nyoil II - A thin film synthetic lubricant that is great for knives that are a little on the tight side. Makes them walk and talk with just a drop or two.

I've also heard of collectors who use Mobil 1 and use a toothpick for an applicator. I haven't tried it personally, but a quart would last an awfully long time.

I prefer CLP Break Free for just about anything metal , I use it on my guns as an 'all in 1' cleaner , I use it on my knives as well , awesome stuff.
