I see people selling them in baggies - but I can't find them locally. What national chains carry fatwood that you know of?

OSH (Orchard Supply Hardware), they seem to appear about the fall and beginning of winter, then disappear during summer. Right now would be a good time to check your hardware stores.

Just got a five pound box of what appears to be nice stuff, StarterStikks, from Lowe's for $9. They had to climb a ladder to get it so the season must be winding down as far as their stocking it.

Target has a pail of it in the small fireplace accessories area. A BUNCH comes in the pail. And it works great!

OSH definately has them, but as Nick said, they're more of a seasonal item.. most big chain hardware stores should carry them...

there is fatwood to be had all over the woods around here.... i still have a big chunk stashed away in the woods...:D

They are seasonal at Home Depot, Lowes, and WalMart around here, but Ace seems to have them year round. Ace is a franchise though, so your area might be completely different.

Resin rich wood used for fire starting/kindling. I'm sure others can give many more details.

Slay my ignorance. What is fatwood and what is it for? :o

Glad to see you arround Zen. It had been a while. As DWK2 stated, fat wood is resin impregnated wood used for firestarting. The way to use it is making fine curls (shaving or just scrapping with a knife) that will easily ignite using a firesteel. The best part is that even when wet, resin burns very well. You can also fix a few larger pieces (from toothpick to pencil sized) to use as kindling, it will help inmensely making fire in the rain.

If you want to harvest it yourself you will need to look for old pine stups or thick broken branches (but look for it in the tree, not in the fallen branch). I only got partially lucky finding it myself though. As already stated, the easiest way for you guys in the US is to harvest it at Walmart :D.

Grocery stores like Kroger, Food Lion, Meijer, and Publix sell one pound boxes of fatwood in the BBQ/charcoal/fireplace log isle for something like $3.99.

Take a look next time you're there.

I have seen it in grocery stores as well. I know for fact Big-Y and at least some local IGA stores have it. I would like to say Shaws (owned by Suprvalu) used to sell it too, but I can't say for sure- its been too long since the local one closed. They were a division of Albertson's when they were selling it. It was with the fireplace stuff. YMMV.

I got tons of it on clearance a while back from Meijer. It is in the camping section. The brand name is something like Magic Fatwood.

They are seasonal at Home Depot, Lowes, and WalMart around here, but Ace seems to have them year round. Ace is a franchise though, so your area might be completely different.

+1 I have plenty, but always compelled to look. Local Ace seems to have it all the time, and periodically restocked as I see the stock depleted and replenished.

Google "fatwood" and lots of stores show up. Plow and Hearth is prominent. I bought 25 lbs for $22. They even had free shipping at the time. That is a lot of sticks for camping but if you have a fireplace they go pretty fast.

Meijer is a midwest thing - you bastards! I miss that store a lot!

In Texas we just have Sam Walton's invention and his children's abomination.
