Specifically what exactly is a gentleman's folder? What makes it a gentleman's Folder?
Thanks

It's the same as what makes a tactical knife a tactical knife. You know it when you see it.

There seems to be some consensus, smooth lines, drop point, natural handle materials, satin finish blade, ect.

I'd go buy a poutine and an opinel

Edit: oh my, I've found myself in the wrong thread. To the OP, I would say the gentlemans folder has sexy, non-tacticool lines

I feel that it should be nice looking, bordering on "man jewelry", at the same time able to take care of general tasks. It should also be non-threatening,to anyone. A true gentleman does not startle the fairer sex. Most of the gentlemen i have known,do not have to prove their manhood. They were manly enough to be gentle.regards Henry

Well said, sir!

Small, classy, good quality materials, good-looking but still functional, natural handle materials, light weight, and a nail-nick

Why a nail-nick? A small, tumbstud - equipped knife made of good materials can be quite gentlemanly. I would prefer stag, bone or some nice hardwood to go with my tweed jacket and brown brogue shoes.

During history gentlemen carried swords that were highly decorated. They could also be quite plain, but in a classy way, like English "mourning" smallsword with all black hilt parts. So first class materials and classy styling makes a gentleman's knife. A very nice folding dagger could be a "gentleman's knife".

My own thoughts are that it's slightly incongruous, but in terms of a thumb-stud they can cause wear to trouser and jacket pockets, which I don't want happening to my expensive suits,

For a great idea of what a gentleman's folder should be, take a look at the William Henry EDC- or really, any WH. Small, sleek, quality materials. Still built to get the job done, but without being overbuilt or beefie.

Small in size.
Made of nice materials.
Fine in finish.
Easy wearable.
You love to fondle it and show it around.
