What makes it an EDC?

I was just giving my 2 cents in another thread, and I had to step back for a second. Here's the question:

What Qualifies as an EDC?

You really carry it everday?

It's one of a limited set in rotation? If so, how large is that set?

It's the only one you ever carry?

You carry it everyday for a certain period before you rotate?

Thoughts?

What qualifies it as an EDC? I carry it every day.

You really carry it everday? Yes.

It's one of a limited set in rotation? If so, how large is that set? Everybody's different. For me it's three, but you'll probably get a different answer from every person you ask.

It's the only one you ever carry? Sometimes yes, sometimes no; see the response to the previous question.

You carry it everyday for a certain period before you rotate? I carry a knife every day, all the time. Speaking only for myself, there's no set rationale to what I carry. I just go with what I feel like carrying that day. Others may do things differently.

What Qualifies as an EDC? Like Samael, I carry it everyday.

You really carry it everday? Yes.

It's one of a limited set in rotation? If so, how large is that set? I carry a Mini Grip when I go out, and a BM 42 at home.

It's the only one you ever carry? In regards to legality, yes.

You carry it everyday for a certain period before you rotate? Out of my home, Mini Grip, at home, 42. I carry all of the time, or at least have it in arms reach.

Thoughts? I think it is like Samael said, every person you ask will have a different answer.

1. Anything that you carry every day.

2. yep

3. depends on how many new knives you have and are getting. :p

4. To many good knives to chose from, must use them all. :D

5. Yes, one set for work and one set for after.

6. A EDC can be anything as long as you carry it everyday.

As for knives these are the usual suspects

What Qualifies as an EDC? -->>>Carry it Everyday(or close to it)

You really carry it everday?-->>>>Yes, unless I forget(that really sucks) or am at school all day.

It's one of a limited set in rotation? If so, how large is that set?--->>Have about 3 that I rotate in.

It's the only one you ever carry? --->>>Sometimes, it depends on what I am doing that day.

You carry it everyday for a certain period before you rotate? ---->>>>Usually a Trance/Old timer and usually rotate to Lahar on Weekends/Days off.

Thoughts?--->>>Variety is the spice of life...Rotate new knives in every so often.

Do you carry it everyday? Yes
Is it part of a set? No
Do you rotate knives? No
IMHO I found the best everyday carry folder:Spyderco Manix C95
It's on me 24/7 except when I'm in the shower. If you lived where I live you'd probably do the same.Rough neighborhood:D
A lot of people find it too big and heavy for EDC.I hardly notice it,but then I
EDC'd a Spyderco police for 10 years before finding the Manix. The police is retired now-served me very well, but I'll end up selling it.
I don't need more than one folder:eek:,although I liked the Manix so much I bought a spare-redundancy-and they don't make em anymore.Until something better comes along I'm set for life.
Now if you're talking fixed blades that's an entirely different story:D

What qualifies it as an EDC?
Its what I carry everday or part of a small rotation of several knives.

You really carry it everday?
Its part of a small selection of knives that I rotate through. Sometimes I carry it for weeks at a time before I rotate.

It's one of a limited set in rotation?
Yes.

If so, how large is that set?
The set I rotate through cosists of about five knives.

It's the only one you ever carry?
No.

You carry it everyday for a certain period before you rotate?
It depends on the situation, size can be a factor aswell as the activities I haved planned for the day.

What Qualifies as an EDC? A knife that you carry everyday,or for a period of several days

You really carry it everday? Yes. I have one,a SAK, that is a true EDC. Always carried with one or two others.

It's one of a limited set in rotation? If so, how large is that set? My set is currently five. My SAK and four fixed blades. Two Custom and two production.A third custom is due in June and will enter my rotation.

It's the only one you ever carry? No, I generally have three knives on me, always have two.

You carry it everyday for a certain period before you rotate? My SAK always, the others could be days, weeks, or months before I swap out from my "EDC users".

Thoughts? I have others I will carry as the mood strikes. These are mostly from my vintage slipjoint collection. I don't consider these EDC's.

I'll add one more very important comment: I have many, many knives. Of all of them, exactly three are legal for me to carry. This is why I've stated that three knives are my "EDC" knives.

Before you even consider a knife for everyday carry, be sure you know the laws concerning knife carry where you live and abide by them. Yes, they're mostly pretty stupid and I don't agree with them, but that's the way it is.

What Qualifies as an EDC?...A knife that I look forward to carrying - if it doesn't excite me after I buy it, or I lose interest in it, it gets demoted.

You really carry it everday?...Yup - I always have at least 2 knives on me at all times.

It's one of a limited set in rotation? If so, how large is that set?...I pull from 4-5 knives that are in my current EDC pool. As I buy new ones, I retire the one that doesn't do it for me any more.

It's the only one you ever carry?...No way man! If I had 20 pockets and a strong belt I'd carry my entire EDC pool.

You carry it everyday for a certain period before you rotate?...No set limits on how long I carry a particular knife. I do currently have 2 knives that have been in my EDC pool for almost a year now, which is a record for me.

1.Something slim, comfortable to use

2.No sometimes I switch

3.Yeah, between about five knives

4.Hell nopes.

5.I carry in until I set it on my dresser, then I might either rotate to a new knife or EDC the same one

1- something I carry everyday

2- yes, everyday

3- about 3 to 5 knives that I rotate between

4- nope, always carry two

5- no set time on rotation, sometimes a couple days, sometimes a couple months.

What Qualifies as an EDC? Something you feel comfortable using, can put all your trust into and can take on the tasks you need to use it for everyday.

You really carry it everday?
EVERYDAY carry, it's kind of self explanatory. Having an EDC rotation I feel is having multiple EDC's, maybe from years before. I don't find it a true EDC but more of a switchup when you're bored or need a specific knife. EDC is that one blade that you have on at all times no matter what.

It's one of a limited set in rotation? If so, how large is that set?
Read above explanation.

It's the only one you ever carry?
Until you find you need to change your blade configuration or it poops out, yes. It should be like brushing your teeth, everyday!

You carry it everyday for a certain period before you rotate? Not me.

Thoughts?

What Qualifies as an EDC? A knife you carry everyday.

You really carry it everday? Everyday, everywhere. Common sense rules you can't carry on an airplane or through a security checkpoint, etc. But if I know I'm going somewhere like that I still carry to the location and than leave my weapon locked up in my car.

It's one of a limited set in rotation? If so, how large is that set? I don't regularly rotate my EDC. Maybe over the period of a few years?

It's the only one you ever carry? No, I carry 2 blades at any given time on my person. 1 fixed blade at the very least.

You carry it everyday for a certain period before you rotate? Nope, all day long from waking up until going to bed. Depending on where I am sleeping, I may have it on me in bed even.

Thoughts? EDC is a term used across many hobbies. For me it means an item or weapon that is on you all the time no matter what. My knives are part of my EDC, as is my wallet, my pen and pad, my lighter, my car keys, etc.

What Qualifies as an EDC? - a knife I could carry every day all day

You really carry it everday? - yes

It's one of a limited set in rotation? If so, how large is that set? - I have basically 3 categories of knives,
- ones I can EDC, maybe 10 of them, typically small folders, something that goes in pocket nicely, but occasionally a Buck 110 which is on belt, as it's too big for pocket IMHO
- ones I can't EDC usually due to size or shape, Ka-Bar 1215, Seal Pup Elite, Spyderco Aqua Salt, even my ZT0350 is a bit big for EDC, depending on the pants I'm wearing, etc.
- shelf queens - I only have one right now, and it's not even expensive but it was given to me as a gift for being a Godfather to my buddy's daughter, so it's sentimental, and personally engraved with a message from the family. It's only a Byrd Cara Cara stainless, but I'd hate to lose it or damage it.

It's the only one you ever carry? - rotate

You carry it everyday for a certain period before you rotate? - usually when I get a new one or bored of it.

Good post. IMHO, this term seems overused. Seems like every unremarkable knife gets classified as "EDC".

Of course, the term attracts me too. I actually own no big choppers or safe queens (though I have a stunning 12" fighter that was gift from a smith) - every purchase I make gets evaluated for it's EDCability.

The responses have been good too -- interesting that the "EDC" status of a knife is not based on design or price, but on the user's actual use of the knife. Makes me wonder -- if I own an "EDC-style" knife but don't ever get it into rotation, is it really an EDC?

What Qualifies as an EDC?
A knife with a useful blade or blades for general utility chores, of a size that fits comfortably in my pocket (loose or on a clip). That's pretty much it. To me, EDC does not necessarily mean I carry it every day, but that it is suitable for everyday uses (if that makes sense)

You really carry it everday?
I really carry something every day, yes.

It's one of a limited set in rotation? If so, how large is that set?
Depends. It varries as my interest and collection change. Right now, my EDC "rotation" consists of a Kershaw Leek Composite, a Spyderco Centofante 4, a Case CV Swayback Jack and a Case CV Trapper. A month ago the specific list of knives was different, and next month it could change again.

It's the only one you ever carry?
Like I say, it varries.

You carry it everyday for a certain period before you rotate?
No, its really more of a spontaneous choice every morning as I am getting dressed. ;)

What Qualifies as an EDC?
A blade I plan to carry/ use over a period of time for genaral duties. (at least a month until I change for some reason). Some edc's stay the same for 2.0--2.5 years.

You really carry it everday?
Whatever is my EDC, I carry daily.

It's one of a limited set in rotation? If so, how large is that set?
I rotate knives from whatever is in the collection (over 500) and whatever I feel like carrying.

It's the only one you ever carry?
See above

You carry it everyday for a certain period before you rotate?
I carry it until I get bored with it, want to try something new, lost it,
