What material between scales and tang ?

Hey , Juha. I use thin sheet of g10. I guess micarta would also work , or some other kind of composite material with the right thickness and color.

Waterproof epoxy! ;)

For liners, I like to use thin G10, copper, and brass. Be aware that metal liners can heat up a lot when grinding them with powered equipment like a belt sander, and that heat can cause an epoxy bond to fail.

Vulcanized fiber, a.k.a. fishpaper, is a popular choice for liners too, but some people have had failures from it swelling due to absorbing water while others never had a problem.

Micarta is another material some other like for liners. Wood can make a really attractive linrer as well.

Here is a link to the spacer material as shown on the USA Knifemakers Supply web site.
This is not an indorsement just a convenient link. Almost every knife makers supplier on the planet carries the stuff.
Trugrit, Pop's, Jantz, Sheffield, etc.

The spacer material is flexible and tends to act as a expansion joint between the tang and the grips. This helps reduce the stress on the epoxy bond during extreme temperature and humidity changes.

Yep, the vulcanised "fiber" known as "fish paper" is what I've used in the past. That's why I was asking the John mc c if there was a link to the vulcanised rubber mentioned.

Hey no big deal John - that vulcanised fiber does have a "rubbery" feel to it. I've not had any problems with it, and sorta like using it over G10 stuff. But, I do use both - all depends on what I've got at the time.

I've used the vulcanised paper/fiber stuff. Definitely had some issues with that, due to moisture or expansion. Though that was in my Devcon epoxy days. I stopped using both, and now use GFlex and thin G10. G10 absorbs nothing at all.
