Iam working on my B.O.B. kit and in my sewing kit I have some 100% polyester thread. I just realized that maybe I should be using stronger thread Is there something stronger that I should be using for field repairs?
Nylon? maybe?
Cheers,
Dave.

Dental floss is good and inexpensive.

I also use braided (stranded) fishing line.

The disadvantage of fishing line is that most of them don't stretch much. The ability to stretch shows its virtues when tying knots and such. But it is strong.

I highly recommend upholstery thread. It's very strong, cheap, and sold everywhere regular thread is sold. I do all of my own repair sewing. Here's how I do it.
1. run the thread thru the needle and leave yourself plenty of thread to work with.
2. after you cut the thread from the spool tie both ends together with a double overhand knot. (you've now made it double strength)
3. after you put the needle thru the fabric for the first time run it thru the loop(you have a loop since ends are tied together)
4. sew up the tear.
5. at the end tie a couple of overhand knots and add a drop of super glue to your knot so that it stays put forever.
6. I've used this method on repairs and buttons and it lasts

Wow thank you guys for your input, now I have lots of options to work with.
Cheers,
Dave.

When you put a button back on, finish up by wrapping the threads under the button so that the threads can not be directly cut by friction. Sew the button on like normal, tie off the thread, but before you cut it off, run the threadout between the button and the cloth and wrap it around the threads holding the button on a layer or 2, than back inside for another tie-off.

My pants have buttons that come off in a year or so. I have replaced buttons that have lasted 10. Of course that may also be because of the dental floss.

Go to your local Joanne fabric (or other fabric store) and ask. I know Jo Ann fabric have a good selection of various weights of thread. You may need to get yourself a few thicker needles for this.

I always use thin Spiderwire braid. Awesome stuff. Very flexible, but extraordinarily strong.
