I had forgotten about that blade! You got yourself a Patriot Combat. I think it was made in the mid-90s but not sure about the steel or handle material though.

Gerber Patirot- Zytel, 440a, early to late 90's, it was discontinued a bit back. It was a Blackie Collins design, a blue chisel point diving model was maketed as the Moray.

It was in the $80-100 range.
:).

I remember those. As I recall the handle and sheath are Zytel (could be wrong, faulty memory sometimes) and I think the steel was 440A. I believe that it is one of the many knives Blackie Collins designed for them.

They used to also make a dive version...blue handled I think with a chisel tip for prying. Dont know if the same steel was used.

We used to sell these knives years ago at a knife store I worked at. The sheath always seemed to have a neat gadget factor, although after the people owned them for a bit they would complain about the bulk.

Seemed to be a nice enough knife...on par with the Buck Nighthawk, although the Nighthawks handle was preferred by most who handled them side by side.

Dont know if yours has any collector value, but you never know.

Edited to add: I was obviously posting at the same time as Bob.

Gerber used to make alot of interesting knives like the BMF,Guardians,MkI and II,Parabellum and of course the above mentioned patriot. Instead of following a trend they led it. Sorry to see those old designs are discontinued.

Yes it is indeed a Gerber Patriot you have there.
There was a review by Kim Breed (???) about the time of the first Gulf War in the Blade magazine.
As I can recall, it was a favorable report, but for one thing... the loud noise which was caused by the knocking of the blade against its sheath. A big no, no, for the boys in uniform.
The article in fact mentions its use during the conflict by two servicemen.
It had similar blade length and pattern with the Gerber LMF, which was more comfortable and a lot less noisy to carry.
But on the whole, the Patriot is as steady as it comes.
A good knife if you ask me, but for its rather uncomfortable and short handle.

Krizzard, out

The Patriot is my primary dive knife - a pointed model, identical to the knife in the photo. The nitride(?) coating aids in rust resistance, and the sheath is outstanding for use as a dive knife because of it's positive retention and secondary lock, not to mention it's zytel construction prevents water/UV rot.

440A is good stuff to use when the knife is submerged in ocean environments, good corrosion resistance and decent edge retention. Has held up well under pretty hard use, prying, chopping and general cutting chores. The pommel makes a great signal device, for banging against your air tank. Bought mine new at the Ft. Bliss PX in 1995 IIRC.

It's a challenge to find a knife better suited to diving.

I have one too. Got sent it to review in the early 90's. The sheath is convenient for a variety of point-up carry options, but it IS noisy.
