What do you think the best fiddleback forge model would be to carry horizontal? Exp. would be a cross draw type sheath. Do think Edcll is to big to carry that way? Knife will be used for work and I prefer to carry that way. Thanks for any advise. Jay

My vote would be a hiking buddy with one of Jou Fuu's vertical or horizontal carry sheaths. Great combo.

EDC II would work. Hiking buddy and Bushraptor are optimal for it. Bushboot would just make you look like a supreme bad ass :)

A Sneaky Pete or an Asp might work pretty well. The handles aren't too long...just beefy. Bushraptor is a solid choice. Ladyfinger, in spite of the fact that it has a respect problem due to the name, would be a great choice as well.

Andy likes stabby knives; I would love to see him build a Wharncliffe with a 3-1/2" x 1" blade and a 4" handle in 3/16 or .200" O1 or CPM 154 (or S35VN or Elmax).

Rick Lowe makes a sweet low pro crossdraw I carry on the front of my belt. I have one for almost every fiddle back made. I haven't found one yet that I don't like and find very comfortable.

You can reasonably do just about any 4" model -- an edc I/II would be great; all of the local leather benders here (RLO, Heber, Jou'Fuu) can do various horizontal setups if you do a few quick searches, you should find some fine examples!

Personally, I've been carrying a Sneaky Pete every day that I'm off duty in one of my BTB sheaths for about 4 or 5 weeks now - on my moto, running errands, etc. It stays put like it should. IMO, any Fiddleback bigger than the 4"er's would be too big to carry comfortably horizontally. I dont like Kydex for my nicer knives. Good enough for a tactical/purpose built knives but it scratches the blade and I'm picky about my knives. BTW, my FB EDC-IIs and Hiking Buddys are the same OAL. I havent made a BTB for the HB or EDC-II .. but something for me think about for a new design.

I considered a horizontal sheath design for the 4" knives but decided against it. I do think some would work as a small of back knife, but I wouldn't want one on my side. The 'boot and similar is about as big as I'd carry on the hip. The Karda is considered a necker, but honestly, I think it's too big to be carried that way. At least my 5/32 full tang. Maybe a 1/8 with a tapered tang would change my mind but I doubt it.

What I do like is my Karda in the angled sheath. Can be worn cross draw or on the dominant side and is plenty comfy.

Whichever Fiddleback you choose it'll be a good one. ;)

On a personal note I only carry smaller (HB,Bushboot, etc.) vertical due to shoulder problems. Horizontal carry is great with the small ones, but works just fine with the mid length blades, too. Most of these are being carried small of the back like Bud describes and work well. Needs to be a good tight profile fit regardless of size. For anything larger than a Sneaky Pete, I recommend a crossdraw style on the weak side. Easy to bring long blade out and back in while staying comfortable, even sitting. For what it's worth, I carried a 7" Randall in the small of my back through a tour and a half in country and was happy that it was there.

Thanks guys for the response and info. Sounds like their are a lot more options than I thought. Cimarron56 I to love wharncliffe blades they seem to be the perfect blade for stripping wire and romex. First fiddleback should be in tomorrow. Feels like Christmas Eve!

I've made horizontal carry sheaths for the 3 fingered Joe, EDC, EDKarda, Hiking Buddy, the 4" Models, a Sneaky Pete and even done a few for 12" Machetes. Most were setup to be worn small of back. Front carry, the Hiking buddy is as big as I would go. Now if you're talking canted cross draw, the sky's the limit.
