What motor to power a KMG grinder?

I'm thinking about a Baldor or leeson(spelling?) I want varable speed and at least 1.5hp on 220v. I like how the Baldor has varable speed built into the motor but 1.5hp is max for that setup. The leeson has 2 hp on 220v but you need to buy a seperat controll box for the VS which adds another couple hundred bucks to your set up. I will be running the motor on a 220v 30 amp circut. Thanks for the help!

If you want to go DC for variable speed, my preference is the Leeson motor and control.
I have been using a 11/2 HP Leeson for 11 years on one of my grinders, and have had no problems at all.

However, if you want to go AC for your variable speed wants, Jonesy, one of the members here sells all the stuff you need. And I do believe you will save some $$ going that way, not to mention, no torque loss at all. You can't bog them down.

I'd go with the AC Variable Frequency Drive (VFD). As Mike mentioned they can be run in constant torque mode. If you can get one at a good price from a list member I'd go that route. Here's the place I bought all of mine from:

If you scroll down you will see the internet special, where they have a 2 h.p. motor/controller combo for $385. Shipping was $20 to me in Knoxville from N.Y., where they are located. I've been extremely pleased with the ones I've bought from them. I'll have to contact Jonesy myself to see what his prices are like, I may be in the market for more in the near future.

I'd forgotten about dealers electric. Pretty hard to beat that deal.:D

Thanks guys!
How difficult would it be to mate the KMG to that internet special motor at Dealers electric?

It's not difficult at all. You put a sheave on the KMG drive shaft and another sheave on the motor shaft and connect with a v-belt! :D

Here's some pictures of when I set up my first KMG. This first picture shows the two sheaves and v-belt.

This image show the bracket I made to mount the motor and controller on. This also allows you to adjust belt tension if you need to...

...and finally the KMG and motor mounting bracket before it was all wired up... Hope this helps.

I have the Baldor 1.5 enclosed unit from TruGrit. On 220V I think there are almost no problems. I have had none (knock on wood) and all the bad stories are from guys using 1.5 HP on 110V--not a good idea I am told.

I also have a 3HP Baldor DC, new, that I was going to hook up to the KMG. But the 1.5 has been more than enough power. I seldom run it at full speed and never bog it down. Anyone want a 3HP motor?

Thanks again! Do the sheaves come with the grinder? if not how do you know what size to buy?

Tell Rob what type motor you're going to use and he will advise you.
