I have been trying to get started in knife making and made a couple out of files by hand tools. I woke up this morning and this is what I unwraped. I began using it today and I love it. I just wish I had more belts besides the one 80 grit it came with. I guess I need to order some more belts. I started working on a camp knife I am making out of 1095. I still have a lot of work to do. What dou you think so far honest critizem please. By the way got my first cut today but learned a very valuable leason. Be sure you are in postion before setting th steel to the disk sander. The steel was snached right into the sander. I got left with the cut in the pictures. It wasnt to bad bout 1/8 inch deep. What do you think of the this wood for the scales?

Good for you dude.Sure beats files. For your first grinds they don't look bad.The wood should look good on it.
For belts tru-grit.com has a good selection for the 2 X 42.
I used one for about 3 years was a good little machine.

It sure does beat files. I still have to work the bevels some to even them out. the finger groove still needs some work. I was thinking bout ordering from true grit. I not sure what the wood is. I think it is suppose to be cocobolo. I got a package of scales 3 years ago and cant remember what they were. Any one have a input on what the wood is.

I am making one next weekend. I am making it 2x6 foot to mount a drill press and a vise on I think that should be big enough. I was worried bout using it at fist but it was steady. It is very much a temp thing, not as safe I am sure and not to comfortable to boot.

Hey it's a Christmas morning picture,a kid sitting in the floor playing with his toys:D

Heck yeah Had to try her out. My daughter was playing with her toys. My wife was as well. I thought I would give it a shot. I hope that all the info I have gotten from here will result in a good Knife. There is a ton of info here and I feel way more capable than I was before.

Have fun! And you might consider at least using a dust mask, if not a respirator--nothing that comes off a belt grinder is really good to breath, and some can be dangerous (or worse).

Thanks will have to get one of those this weekend. I should have known better than to do it but hey now I know for sure. It scared the heck out of my wife when I came in bleeding. I told her I was being stupid and she watched for a minute as I resumed.

I am getting my order ready from Tru-grit. I plan getting new belts between 36 and 600. I thinking 36 or 50 for profiling then going up the ladder. I just not sure which type of belts to get. Any input would be helpful.

yea i second that. a mask of some sort is very very important... even just a bandana for now untill you can get something better

i to have been thinking into making my own knivews and that knife looks 10x better than my first attempt at a file knife. i would show you a picture but i threw it away it was so bad LOL

I will be getting a dusk mask for sure. I will try to find a good resiprator now. Thanks for pointing that out. I was very unprepared today I just had to. I couldnt resist. I am also going to get a face shield.

Any one try the 3M respirator from Tru-grit.
3M Half FacepieceRespirator Assembly with 3M Particulate Filters

Is it any good? Any suggestions

I've never bought belts in that size, but norton SG belts for roughing and refining (36-220 grit) are the gold standard. Norax and trizact engineered abrasives(EA) from norton and 3m are fantastic for refining and polishing (150-1200+ grit). I also like Hemes belts, especially their 400 cork. Whatever you use, I'd always go with butt jointed belts, no finger joints. There are other great belts out there that might be better and cheaper, especially for the steel you're grinding. I'm mainly grinding S30V, which can be a pain to grind.
