I thought we might need a spot to collect news from Blade. I would hope that the attendees would post any information of interest, so that the rest of us do not feel totally left out.

Don't count on seeing anything from the makers until the show is over, and maybe a few days of needed rest after that.

A few of them took digital cameras and planned on posting some photos this weekend.

Greetings from Atlanta! I am in the hotel room right now, typing on the wireless keyboard and looking at my TV. The show has been amazing so far. I have not heard the announcement for any of the knife awards at this time, I know they were calling for the knives to be judged about1.5 hours ago.
I've had an excellent show so far. I've managed to come away with 2 Carson folders. I also had my name pulled in the Emerson drawing and got a CQC8. My first buy of the show, however, was an amazing fixed blade from Dan Farr. Walnut and stag handle and forged 1084 blade. It is simply a stunning piece. I also picked up a simonich bittroot for my dad for father's day.
The show is a blast. Lots of knives left and lots of makers selling out in 5 minutes time. I definately won't miss this show in the near future. I don't have a digital camera, so I have no pictures right now. I will take some of my buys Sunday when I return to the house.

Jeremy, thanks for the update, and congrats on your new goods, especially the Carsons and the 8.

Hey Jeremy,
Who sold out in 5 minutes--the usual?
How did Mike O do?
Stop by and see my buds from World of Knives, Hopkins MN.

Have fun, dude!!

And say Howdy to Mike Irie for me!!! Check out his goods as well, good guy, hard worker for sure...
Wish I could be there!

and by all means, you guys/gals post some pics asap...:)

Most of the big names sold out very quickly. Brend, Fisk, Carson, etc... Not to mention the guys who sold out in the bar Thursday night.

The CQC8 was nice while it lasted.. I was made a trade offer I simply couldn't turn down. I now have a 1 of a kind carbon fiber fixed blade with inlayed stellite blade material from Kit Carson, as well as a talonite bitteroot from Simonich incoming shortly in place of the CQC8.

MikeO has done well. He had to leave town for a few days for a funeral back home, so he missed a few workings days to prepare for blade. Most of the knives he brought were unfinished, but was taking names and sending them out in the next couple of weeks to his customers.

db, the prototype framelocks are outstanding. The one I own (the only handmale prototype) is especially nice :D I was also able to pick up a stellite m4 with carbon fiber, a knife I have been looking for and lusting after for a long time.

Seems lots of people are getting into the mid-tech game. I picked up one of the Branton/Brend mid-techs Model 2s. The model 2 is one of my favorite all time fixed blade designs, I just never could find one or afford it one I did find one of the real deals from Walter. These mid-techs are nice and extremely clean. Well worth the cash.

I will try to report back tommorrow when I see all of the winners for the handmade awards. I will also post about the cutting competition of the ABS, as that is the thing I have been looking forward too the most.

See you guys later.

Well, I have a little time for some more updates.

The handmade awards are complete. I didn't have a pen when I saw the list, os I couldn't write everything down. I do remember seeing the names Newton, Fisk, and Fitch on that list.

Now, to the report on one of my favorite parts of the show, the ABS cutting championships.

This year was the first annual championship for the ABS cutting contests. The 5 contestants, based on points in previous competitions were John Fitch, Jim Crowell, Kevin Cashen, Mike Bauer, and Ray Kirk.

The first competition was the 2" x 4" chop. The contestans had a 2x4 in a vice and had to chop through the board. This was a timed event won by Kevin Cashen in a time of 7.8 seconds.
Ray Kirk was out after this event, as his knife showed a roll in the edge

The second event was a can cut. A water filled can was placed on an empty can, and the can on top was to be cut cleanly in half. 3 points if both can fell, 5 if the bottem remained on the stump, and 10 points of the bottom of the water filled can remained on top of the empty can. All 4 competitiors earned 5 points.

The next event was called the camp fire girl. The scenario was a person was stuck in the woods, hypothermia was creeping up, and a fire had to be made. The contestants were given a 6" block of 2x4 and had to slice it long ways. THey had 20 seconds to cut as many pieces as possible. Crowell was first with 9, followed by Fitch and Cashen with 8, and Bauer with 7.

The 4th event was to cut an empty water bottle that was hanging from a string. 0 points for no cut, 3 for cutting the bottle and breaking the sring, and 5 for cutting the bottle without breaking the string. Fitch was the only contestant to cut the bottle, and he broke the string for 3 points.

The final event was the "name it and chop it" rope cut. The contestants had to name how many strands of rope they felt they could chop through, freehanging the rope from a stand. Five points were given for each strand cut, 0 if you could not cut what you named. Fitch tried 3, all others tried 2. Crowell was the only person to succeed in this event.

The final standings had Crowell in first, followed by Fitch in second, Cashen in third, and Bauer in 4th.

That was the only semminar i made today. I am flying out in the morning, and will probably post more tommorrow night.

James,

Thanks for the reply. Shoot me an e-mail when you see this. I don't have your e-mail here, and there are a few things I think you need to know about :D

Thanks for the report Jeremy. I was kind of pulling for Jim Crowell as he was one of my instructors at Old Washington. Have you ever thought about a job for CNN?????

BLADE show was a great experience. Especially me being a new maker. I met a lot of great folks. Jeremy was one fella I met and he was quite a nice fella too ! All the makers were out during and after the show. The after show activities however were the most fun. Kickin' back tie one on and share stories as well as party down. Great times and very nice bunch of guys. Neil Blackwood, Brent Beshara, Wally Hayes, Jeff Diotte, Eric(Normark) On Scene Tactical, Kit Carson, the Strider boys, Randal 16-1 (Brian Everette), Guro Jeff Chung and Guro Ray Dionaldo (Excellent Kerambit demonstrations !!!), Steve Ryan, Rosanghol,Acientsul (Liong Mah), Shelby Chan, Redline, Sky Masterson, Patrick and Evan from T.A.D. Josh from Strider. Many of the other forumites from this and other sites were there and were very cool. I am gonna attempt to get a table for next years show. I sold some knives and made some $, made a few friends too. I can't ask for more. Take care all.....RDT

Jeremy, great recap of the cutting competition!

Well, I knew everyone would want details on the cutting competition, so I set outside with a pen and my program writing the notes on the events and points. I was so amazed by the things I was seeing, that I would have never remembered the details going from memory alone.

One of the best parts of the competition was putting a microphone on Jerry Fisk. The man has a great sense of humor and truely enjoys the competitions. His pride in the work done by the competitors shines through.

Someone will correct me if I am wrong, but I believe I can remember the blade steels used by each competitor. Fitch and Crowell used 1084, Bauer used 5160, and Kirk used 52100. Cashen used a damascus of his own making with L6 as one of the steels. I can't remember the other. The bauer and kirk steels may be reversed, I am having a hard time remembering.

I hope Jerry or others will be along to fill in any missing details of this event.

It was great meeting new faces and seeing old faces again. Gus, as always, could be spotted from a mile away with the world's largest grin on his face. He started smiling at Noon on thursday and still hasn't stopped. I had a great time and look forward to doing it again next year.

Jeremy,
Thanks for the kind words. Please remember I am here to do any rehab. or refinishing of the handle or blade in the future, or even sharpening etc.
