I'm really convinced that the Swamp Rat blades are awesome. I've never heard anything bad, so I'm looking to buy one for a backwoods/utility knife. I like the balance of a 6 inch blade and can't seem to find a 6" offering by SRKW. Am I overlooking it or is there some reason for this?

I see plenty of blades over 7" and several under 5", but nothing in between.

why is this? or should I just go with a Howling rat??

I am a fan of a 6" user, but I found the same thing here in the swamp. No 6". So I ordered the Howler, and I'm here to tell you.........NO REGRETS! It's one of the best blades I've ever used. I just ordered new pants for it from armoralleather, and will order a second howler soon. It will more than suffice until Swamp Rat produces a 6" blade.

Hi Basko,

No six inchers on the regular line-up. yet. Although there was a special release Desert Jack which I believe was six inches.

The DJ was a tan version of the bottom knife...the unreleased "Satin Rat".

Though, as has been said, you cannot go wrong with a Howling Rat.

This site shows the little rat thinking big!

I just bought my second Howler today! (a 3/16" standard version to go along with my 1/4" Howling Fat). I can't say enough about these knives!

The Desert Jack is a fantastic knife, and I’m sure everyone will want one when the regular black version (Satin Rat/Swamp Jack) is released.

You’d be surprised how nimble the Camp Tramp feels in hand, so you could really go either bigger or smaller and still be a very happy rat owner.

woah! [That link about firebuilding with the HR] That's impressive for an "under 5 inch" knife. I may just have to go with the HR.....for now.

Thanks for the quality replies. I'm looking forward to my first rat already.

I understand that there is a wait on most SRKW purchases. How long is a typical wait for an HR? (assuming there is a "expected" wait time).

BTW, which rat is used on this page

edited for link.

I'm glad that you liked that link! And I'm obviously going to encourage the purchase of a Howling Rat (for now. ;) They always multiply). Also, keep in mind that Howling Fats just might show up at the Company Store soon. That's a .250" Howler!!

That second link that you mention uses the Camp Tramp. There's also a Ratweiler page in there somewhere.

I don't know about the wait times. It just always depends. With a few notable exceptions, they generally ship out fairly quickly. Stock answer is 3-6 weeks on this popular question.

:D :D :D
