What...no traditional slip joints?

I was looking through my collection earlier this morning, and made a determination...

1. Liner locks -----> Check.
2. Frame locks -----> Check.
3. Autos -----> Check.
4. Fixed blades -----> Check.
5. Balisong -----> Check.
6. Slip...-----> huh?

I don't have any slip joint knives. What's wrong with this picture?

So I go digging around and I guess that old Schrade Uncle Henry my daddy gave me back when I was a young teenager must be packed up in a box somewhere in my storage unit. It would probably take me half a day and the possibility of heat exhaustion in this Texas drought to find it. So I figure if there was ever a time to feel the need to go knife shopping...this is it. What self respecting knife knut doesn't have at least one of the old traditional "pocket" knives in his collection? We must change that.

Now I must admit... back in my youth, I never cared very much for that old Uncle Henry. It's not that it wasn't a good knife, I mean, when daddy gave it to me it was razor sharp and I seem to remember that old knife biting me a time or two. However there was just one thing that kept me from carrying it... it sat in the bottom of my pocket like I was packing a railroad spike. I guess that's where my fondness for clip knives came from. I just clip my knife on the top seam of my pocket and voila!!

Well here I am on a new knife collecting mission.

So I pull up this particular forum and spend a good hour reading through the different threads and looking at pictures and what not, and then I start seeing pictures of Case knives that you guys have posted and my first thought is "Wow, those are really beautiful knives!!" :eek:

At this point, I can't seem to get my shoes on fast enough as I'm grabbing my wallet and heading out the door.

My first stop...my friendly neighborhood Ace Hardware.
I walk in and sure enough they have a small wall mounted display case. Now the selection was not THAT great, but better than I expected. First thing I notice is the yella Peanut is missing from the display. Well darn. So I spend several minutes looking over the rest of what they had and finally make a choice! :thumb up: So I pay for the little knife and I'm sitting in the truck fondling my new purchase, I think to myself... "Ok, lets go see what else we can find." So off I go again.

Three stores later and here I am walking into a Western Wear store on a mission. This gorgeous little cowgirl is more than willing to help me as I walk in looking for the knife case. "Can I help you?" in her southern drawl...

She leads me to the display case and what is the first thing I see? ... a yella Peanut. Well darn LOL!! I already bought one of the other yella knives at the hardware store so I was kind of thinking of something else. One particular model kind of caught my eye and was thinking to myself..."That's IT!!!" That's the one I want. So off to the cash register I go.

So here I sit, with two new slip joints...and a new addiction. :roll eyes:

Case knives are absolutely beautiful and there are so many to choose from. Luckily for me, they aren't overly expensive and the best part is... they make models that are small enough to sit in my pocket and I don't even know they are there. I really like that!

Oh...here's a picture of my Yeller Pen Knife and my Harvest Orange Bone small Texas Toothpick. Some of the pictures kind of blurred on me, but this one is the best one... I hope ya'll like!!

Two really nice knives! You should carry one of them as your only blade. I think you will be pleasently surprised. Congrats on jumping into the world of traditional pocket knives :thumbup:

Very cool... Welcome to the wonderful world of traditional knives, AND the best sub-forum on the interwebs imho...

Those are great choices, and will serve you well for many years. Although I'm sure they won't be your last

Nice going, Johnny. I have a feeling they won't be your last...(especially if you hang around this joint. ;)) :thumbup:

Thanks guys!!

Yeah I agree, I can pretty much guarantee that these little beauties won't be my last. Case makes so many different models and color variations that I could probably get myself in trouble buying them. LOL!!

This forum has been very informative and a lot of fun to read. It's good to be here!

Great choices. I too grew up with a Schrade that hasn't been seen in years and then fell in love with a yeller Case. Life will get interesting for you now...

Welcome to the Sickness:p

Weeell...I've been a victim of the sickness for a while now, LOL. I have just been concentrating my time, efforts and (last but certainly not least)... money, on the larger lock blades. I still like my ZT's, Kershaws and Spydies...but they are more specialized to me. These little slip joints...are a whole different breed. They just seem to be more subtle as well as aesthetically pleasing.

Also, as I saw mentioned in another thread...they are less likely to horrify the "sheeple" when we are faced with the need to cut a thread or peel an apple. I find it hilarious that some would look at this little toothpick and consider it a WEAPON...but I digress, LOL.

I'm already looking at the Case website, researching my next acquisition.

I think I'm doomed. :D

Just wait till you get a chance to use them on a daily basis. That's when the small, thin blades start to shine(no pun intended). When sharp, they just zip through things like they aren't even there.

I'm not trying to dissuade you from buying more Case knives, but if you haven't already you should browse through the traditional forum a bit. The 'What traditional are you totin today?' thread is a great place to start. There are lots of great choices from Case, Queen/S&M, Great Eastern, Canal Street, Moore Maker, Boker, Eye Brand and others. This doesn't even include older knives that can still be found or the beautiful customs that get posted here. My best advice is to either keep your wallet at the ready or have somebody else hide it for you.:D

Oh, and those are a couple of nice knives you have there. Nice choice to get started.

Good for you Johnny. That little toothpick is one I've been wanting to try for a while now.

Yep, they'll zip through things alright...especially my finger if I don't watch how I close these scalpel like blades. LOL

I appreciate the suggestions in regards to the other brands. I thought I had plenty of choices with just Case, but now I see I have lots of research ahead of me.
I have already looked over a few pages of the "What traditional are you toting today?"...thread. Lot's of great pictures and some very entertaining and insightful reading. Now I just have a few hundred more pages to go till I can even get close to current, LOL!!

One thing I noticed very quickly when it comes to the customs, is not only the craftsmanship in the overall project, but the scales used and those GRINDS!!! WOW!!!

I am truly doomed...but I love it!

Good for you Johnny. That little toothpick is one I've been wanting to try for a while now.

Thank you. You should get one!

I saw that little toothpick and I had to have it. The only other contender(s) were that yeller Peanut...which I will be getting soon but probably in a different color, or maybe i'll just collect all of the different models in yeller!! Oh geez ;)

The other was (I'm not familiar with the different models yet) a small Trapper...I think, in a nice blue color. Unfortunately I couldn't get the others as well, so I stayed with my first choice. That little toothpick is a sweet little knife and I just love that slender blade and the curves of the knife in general.

I have been carrying the little pen knife the remainder of the day so the toothpick has been re-wrapped in it's paper and put back in the box. It will most definitely see pocket time though.

Nice start!:thumbup:

I don't know what it is about peanuts, pens, tiny toothpicks, tiny trappers, etc. but these little guys seem to be especially addicting.

P.S. I just happen to have my CV yeller pen in my watch pocket as I type this. ;)

Thanks for sharing and enjoy:cool:
Man you are a lucky bastard:grumpy:, just stepping in your car, drive a few miles and hand picking those knives.;)
If it weren't for all them rattle snakes and big spiders you have there:eek: I wouldn't mind moving to Texas myself:D
You have some real beauties to start with:thumbup:

Don't forget about the scorpions...:eek:

:D;)

So here I am, I guess it's around 5:45am this morning and I'm pocketing all my usuals before I head out to work... and as I clip my scratched up EDC work knife (Ontario Rat 1) into my pocket and turn to leave, I stop, turn around, and there is my little yeller pen knife sitting on the dresser all by it's lonesome. It's like the little rascal was calling to me "take me with you!!!"

So without a second thought I drop the little booger into my pocket and off we head to the job site.

He got to cut some duct tape and some isolation tape for starters. Then one my co-workers asks..."Hey Johnny, you gotta knife so we can cut the ice bag off the water keg?" We tie empty ice bags to the handles of our water kegs for the empty cone cups. "Why sure!!" That little pen knife made short work of all those mundane tasks, and did so quite efficiently.
I'm very happy with this little knife and I'll make sure from now on that I don't turn to leave and forget my little yeller buddy sitting on the dresser.

That toothpick is still wrapped in its paper and tucked away in the box. As things are right now, I'll probably just call it a collector due to my new little yeller pocket 'podnah' getting all the attention. LOL!!

Oh I don't know about being lucky, but I guess living in a LARGE city does have its advantages. I'm a native Texan and will probably die in this state, but geez...it sure is hot!! LOL.

Where I'm at, I don't see to many rattlers. We mostly tangle with Copperheads and Cottonmouths around here and occasionally you'll run across a Coral snake. There are some rattlers around, but mostly up in the central part of the state, the hill country and out west. There is were you'll also find your Tarantulas and Scorpions. Can I box you up some mosquitos and send them to you? Free of charge...I'll gladly pay the shipping!!

My little yellow CV Peanut does the very same to me all the time:D

Well, if you box up a certain Toothpick as well to kill them mosquitos with I'll give you my adress:D;)
