What (non-CB) radio??

Hi guys

I am looking to get a couple of walkie-talkie type radios for use in the hills. I want to get something that will be good for up to say 3 miles line of sight communication. Friends have recommended the Motorola Talkabout or a kenwood of some description. I don't want to get a licence to use the thing. We have them available without licence as PRS (I think in the US it is FRS or similar?)

What recommendations do you have...Are any brands/models better value for money than others?

I have two Motorola Talkabouts that I cant complain about. It only has a two mile range, but if you disassemble it you can remove the limiter and get a better range (supposedly)
 
I have been looking for info on getting more range out of my motorola 5950's. Any Idea where to find info on this?
