What NOT to do with your commander

Found out the hard way... Was leaving my brother's place in downtown Chicago where greater than 2.5' carry is illegal, so...
removed the knife from the pocket clip position and just shoved it in my pocket.
When i reached in to grab my keys, suprise, i nearly cut the tip of one of my fingers off. The blade seemingly does not enjoy staying closed unless the knife is firmly clipped against your pocket's side. My other G-10 axis lock has alot of spring to it that holds the blade closed, mostly preventing this kind of injury, though it's certainly much slower into action than the commander. While i bled for a couple of hours i longed for blade-tip down style knives...

Anybody else have any safety tips on how to avoid missing fingers with this knife?

what not to do with your commander?
its not a work knife, its not a survival knife. its a self defence folder.
nothing more or less.

you took it off the clip and put in your pocket and it bit you. well, you know its sharp now.

lesson learned, do not dishonor the blade by puting it in the bottom of the pocket and do not piss the knife off by puting other things in the pocket with it.

think of it as a purebreed war horse.
its not for work, cause another breed would be better. its not for long distances.
but for a fight, it has the right feel and attitude to make a difference.

can you tell i like commanders??

I have had a Commander come open in my pocket before. I carry mine in my back pocket and it cut through my pocket and into the girlfriend's car seat (boy that sucker is sharp). Don't you know I still catch hell over that one occasionally.

Don't tell her, but she goes before the Commander does.

I believe that that is why the 2000 version of the Commander has the extra detent... to prevent just such occurances.

It IS a fighting knife... and a great one at that.

Well thanks for all the info... though for such a dangerous knife having alot of dos and don't dos, the damn thing should at least include some sort of instruction manual. Guess Ernie will learn the hard way, in court some day...

Not trying to be an ass, but why would it be Emerson's fault when someone messed with his original design? It was not designed to go in the pocket, it was explicitly designed to be clipped to the pocket. The way I see it, it's not Emerson's fault when you or anyone else decides to dick with the original intent and purpose of the knife....Soapbox, that is the problem with society to day, some one buys a sharp knife, knows it's a sharp knife, us it in a way it was not intended to be used and then blames the manufacturer for not making it idiot proof...that's f-ing lame if you ask me.

Jared

PS: I am not saying YOU'RE doing this, I was just disturbed by your "...learn the hard way, in court some day..." statement. It disturbed me.

Broken promises don't upset me. I just think, why did they believe me?

I hope that after I die, people will say of me: "That guy sure owed me a lot of money."

I was also in downtown Chicago 9/10/00 carrying and did not realize that greater than 2.5" is illegal. I am from Wisconsin where the test is whether you are carrying the knife for self protection(concealed weapon) or as a tool(no problem). Is this a State of Il statute or Chicago City ordinance?

Yes the Commander is a great knife born of purpose driven design. But remember, just because its designed for combat doesn't mean it should be oversensitive. That said, the Commander does have a heavy blade with a center of gravity that allows it to open very easily as a result. A knife that folds needs to stay closed under reasonable conditions. Placing the knife in one's pocket is reasonable. The knife really should not open when in this position and is more a design problem than a user error. However, withdrawing the Commander from such a position carelessly by not taking into consideration the fact that the wave might accidentally drag on another item engaging the blade would be a user error. I suppose the Commander should be placed tip down if put entirely in one's pocket.

I knew that comment would get SUMbody's goat. I agree, afterwards i realized the proper way to stick a commander in the pocket is point down.

And I must tell a stupid story now... over the weekend i was in syracuse at a wedding. Prior to my arrival, a bunch of the guys from both families had been at a strip club where a friend of mine was a little touchy feely (he's like that) while trying to "rally" the bride's drunk brother. The bride's brother ended up whipping out a Chris Reeve's folder, for what reason i'm not quite sure. To just show off his knife? to joke? cause he thought my married friend was hitting on him or attacking him? i have no idea. Anyhoo, the guy was talked about as a complete psycho and made fun of the entire weekend. The general consensus (especially among the women) was that guys who carry knives around for defense are psychos. I've realize this public opinion before and in many circumstances taken a knife from the preferred clipped position and thrown it in the pocket, as i'm sure many of you have. Therefore i don't think it brash to expect a "folding knife" to stay closed in one's pocket, just cause the damn thing has a pocket clip. I realize NOW that the commander is a special kind of knife, but DIDNT realize it's inherent danger just looking at it, I learned the HARD way. Therefore i feel it should be some obligation of the manufacturer to warn of such dangers, and if they ignore this, i guarantee if somebody does some serious tendon damage Ernie will be including a list of dos and donts after paying a settlement.

Everyone just excepts me, my knives and guns.

But there again, I know enough to keep my "stuff" in my pants. Especially when out with friends "supporting the arts".

John

John mentioned the Commander cutting through his pants and into his girlfriend's car seat. The same thing happened to me, except it was the La Griffe and it was my wife's leather car seats!
The sheath wasn't on all the way, and, well-you know the rest.
Oh sure: it sounds funny NOW!

When I go to clubs like that my "Banana" wants to come out too!

The CQC8!!!!! Geeeeze guys what did you think I meant

I fell on my La Griffe & cracked a rib while snowboarding. Thank god the little knife didn't go through the kydex. Lesson learned, don't wear a neck knife while snowboarding. Especially if it is your first time.

Remember the saying,"Always be aware of your
surroundings"Here in TAXachusetts one has to tread VERY LIghtly when it comes to issues of knifes/tools or firearms and even beer when i come to think about it geez are there any good states out there??

Laserman 1

Florida & Georgia. Unless things have recently changed, you can really excercise your Constitutional rights in these states.

Brother Methias
Thanks for the link. I will now have to figure out what folding knife to carry in Chicago that has a blade 2.5" in length. Any suggestions from anyone?
