Hey guys. I have a quick question. I just picked up some fine and course small stones to carry on my camping trip made by Smiths, at my local store. I needed something portable in a pinch for my axe and knife in the mountains and didnt have time to order anything. But, someone stole the included oil out of the package, and since it was the last one i took it for a discount. So, Im leaving camping in a few hours, and don't have time to go out and purchase any honing oil.
I use water with my water stones, but never had any oil stones before, and the Smiths package says use light honing oil for best results. So,

#1. Can i use other oil like 3 in 1, or gun oil, or vegetable oil? I have those at my house....

#2. Do i need to use oil or can i use dry or with water like my dmt's?

BTW, These are Smiths diamond stones, the small ones that come in the package with some type of honing oil, a guide for angle, and a triangle stone for serrated knives, which was also stolen from the package. So really, i just got the fine and course little stones that i figure will work ok for my axe.

Thanks for any help

Any mineral oil will do (this includes any 'honing oils' anyway, as they're just mineral oil). With diamond hones, you don't even necessarily need that. Most mfrs. of diamond hones recommend using them with water. Water and dish detergent (Dawn, Ivory, etc.) also works pretty well, and makes cleanup very simple. :)
