What one stove should I get that burns different fuels?

I have already experimented with firestarting with the cotton balls, flint and magnesium. Next I'll try the bow method.

But, for more normal camping, not survival camping, what light stove is there that you'd recommend that burns car gas, kerosine, or what ever is around. I want to have one light do it all stove in case. I'm sure that this could be used in that proverbial survival situation as well.

I have an Optimus Nova, and can heartily recommend it. I know a few people who have an MSR Dragonfly, and it works well. Both of those stoves will work for a wide range of cooking situations, including simmering and pancakes. If you want absolute bulletproof performance and only need to run it on full power (no simmering), get an MSR XGK. Some of the Primus multifuel stoves are good, too.

One word of caution - if you do use automotive fuel instead of clean white gas or kerosene, any stove will suffer from clogging problems. Motor fuels usually have a lot of additives that cause this problem. So only use them as a last resort. Not to mention the fact that automotive gasoline also has a lot of aromatics, like benzene and toluene, that are not that good for you when you spill it all over the place.

Thanks guys for pointing me in the right direction. I'll do my due dilligence and pick the best of the two.

I have an MSR Whisperlite Internationale that burns white gas,Unleaded gas, kerosene, and diesel. Never used anything besides white gas but the instructions say it'll burn the white gas and unleaded as it sits. The diesel and kero require a jet change but all the parts for that are included.

Take a look at the Sierra Zip stove. It burns wood, leaves, just about anything you can find that's dead on the ground in the woods. I really like mine a lot, and it's lighter than my Peak 1 Dual Fuel stove. It'll boil water about as fast as the Peak 1, too. I like it because I don't have to pack any fuel for it.

I assume yours is the model with the battery powered fan? I have the original Z Ztove. It didn't have a fan and was a bit larger. A quote from an evaluation by American Survival Guide, June 1982, page 56:
"ZZ Corporation now is manufacturing a highly fuel-efficient cookstove for those combustibles-poor parts of the world. The device is called the Zip Ztove, abbreviated as ZZtove. Though this product is directed primarily toward people in the wood-fuel-starved areas of the world, the small easily portable Z can serve the survival-oriented people of the U.S. and Canada very well in time of emergency - a power outage or natural calamity, for examples - and in recreational campout situations, too."

Thought you might be interested in the background.

It's an excellent stove for winter camping - not affected by temperatures and you don't have to carry fuel.
