What one thing does your folder gotta have?

There are so many different folders out there. I was wondering what one characteristic is most important to you? For me it's hard to narrow it down to just one thing. I think that the most important thing to me is that the knife has got to have a lock on the blade of some kind. Just too dangerous to use a blade that doesn't lock in my opinion. I also prefer that the knife open with one hand, and has a clip, but I'd give those up to have a lock blade. What are your requrements in a folder? It can be anything: blade steel/grind, tip up or down carry, size limit, thumb hole or stud, pocket clip, left-handed, anything at all. What one thing does your folder just gotta have?

At least a 5" blade.

Hey Walt being a bit sarcastic aren't you.
the most important thing to me is the build quality, I hate a flimsy knife.
The second thing is how it feels in my hand. If it is not comfortable I will not use it.

The only SHARP edge to be ON the blade and not the handle.

For a folder, it MUST open with one hand...My LEFT-HAND.

. (Like my Stainless Spyderco Native II.).

For a fixed-blade ("fighter"), it must have at least a 7 inch long, thick blade. (Like my Gerber BMF...That monster has a 9 inch, 1/4 thick blade.).

First, corrosion resistance, this is easy.Next, one handed closing. This is not so easy as I am left handed.I prefer locking blades but the choice is severely limited if you want to close them one(left) handed.I prefer one handed opening but I will take a sliplock over a locker I can't close with one hand.Third is a thin sharp blade.Last is a size that is comfortable in my front pocket standing up,sitting down, squatting, kneeling, jumping, climbing stairs, etc.I use clips and belt sheaths but soooner or later all knives seem to wind up loose in my left front pocket.

Handles are great. Pivot pins are nice too

I have fallen in love with my Spyderco Rescue. Sheepsfoot blade, verry sharp, won't stab a horse if you have to cut him out of a halter, saddle or whatever else those *&%@@# animals get into. Oh by the way Spydie man... can you make one with a blade and a hoof pick?

D Juvet - thanx for the plug. Anmd We are working on one. Al Pendray's helpin'.

For me, A knife has to have "Reliable high performance". Why else carry a knife? I guess a blade, handle and pivot are also important. Is it assumed that a blade has an edge? or is that another gottahave?

A spine that is not sharp...the one lost art in the knife community. When I put pressure on the spine of my folder or FX I don't want a tatoo on my thumb.

The best at rounding out the spine of a knife IMO is Ed Fowler. Rob Simonich does a good job too.

I'm with Walt, I think: a blade. I mean a great blade. I can get by without a lock. I've done so for years, although it limits what you can do with the knife. Once you have a lock, it has to be utterly reliable, however.
Yes, all the other stuff is important, but stripped down to its essence, for me I think it's the blade.

A metal blade and the ability to fold in that order. No really I have to have a lock at least on my main carry folder. A pocket clip is a must as well.

Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get me.

Three things, a reliable, wear-resistant lock, a solid "screw-through" frame construction, and a sub-3" blade length.
