...in a self defense situation?

...to open a box?

...to impress you know who without risking dropping the thing?

...If you were carrying the bali horizontally on your belt?

...if you were carrying it inverted on your back?

...if you were carrying it hanging from you neck?

...if you were trying to be as inconspicuous as possible?

...if you were trying to be as flashy as possible?

...in any other situation???

For most purposes, specially defense, I would use the straight, vertical opening (let free handle drop, then, with wrist movement fling free handle upwards, get thumb out of way and let free handle through. Or for some flashiness I could use the up and down ricochet opening. Anything fancier and the attacker could kick the knife out of my hand in mid-flip. The moral of this story, I guess would be the cutlery equivalent of the famous gun quote by Eli Wallach in The Good, the Bad and the Ugly: "When you're going to shoot, shoot, don't talk." Too much flipping is the equivalent of too much talk in such situations.

Clay,

you shouldn't post here before most of us do... otherwise, who will go with different style from the GURU?

...in a self defense situation? Probably a double-flip out-to-in. Fast, simple, secure... and leaves you in a good saber grip.

...to open a box? Probably a double-flip out-to-in.

...to impress you know who without risking dropping the thing? Probably a double-flip out-to-in transitioned into a forward finger roll, reverse, transition into a backward finger roll, transition to a couple or three propeller spins, and then a single-flip up. Simple, but with lots of motion.

...If you were carrying the bali horizontally on your belt? Probably a double-flip out-to-in.

...if you were carrying it inverted on your back? Don't know.

...if you were carrying it hanging from you neck? Probably a double-flip out-to-in.

...if you were trying to be as inconspicuous as possible? Single-flip up with insertion of my pinky between the handles to avoid minimize noise.

...if you were trying to be as flashy as possible? five-minute free-style improv session ending with a dramatic, over-the-shoulder aerial.

...in any other situation??? Probably a double-flip out-to-in.
