What other forums do you guys visit (besides BCUSA)? I may be looking for a new "home" soon, and want to check out some different places.

AAPK...basically between BF and AAPK, the only online forums I spend time at.

I have seen you over there John, and there was some interest in your work. Maybe you should open up a store, I think it is very little cost. It's not necessarily a "baton a knife through a log" type of crowd, but a great knife is a great knife, and people will recognize it. There are a lot of hunters on that site as well.

I looked into it, at this time they are too backlogged to allow any more stores to open.

Andy just got me using iknifecollector, seems like a nice place, good folks, not sure if they have stores and such though. I have been looking at etsy.com for selling things though

Knifedogs, IKC, AAPK are the ones I check in most besides BF of course.

So far, the prices for knifemaker forums on the two I checked, are way too pricey! The hobbyist fees are only $10 per month, but that`s not for a forum, only to sell.

It seems the BCUSA knife makers develop a pretty strong following and I see JKs posted there pretty regularly. I looked at the pricing and it didn't seem prohibitive for the level of exposure you would receive and your stuff would fit right in from a style, performance and pricing standpoint. If you sold even 5 extra orders a month it seems like a no-brainer. Maybe test the waters for 3 months and see if it makes sense????

I also (mainly lurk / occasionally post) on EDCforums. Some cool stuff there.

$75 for three months is not bad, but there are already too many makers there now. What the heck, I did it anyway!

I "bit the bullet" and signed up for one on BCUSA, I figure you only live once! I`ll let you guys know when it`s active.

This is the only forum that I regularly visit.

Good luck with your additional memberships, John.

May be time for me to sign up at bcusa and see what all the fuss is about.:D

I think that's a great move and I will start posting there more (remember the little Gathering experiment? I think you will see a big uptick in interest now).

I am working on my business venture and was getting some industry info from a friend. He relayed a little story to me (don't know how accurate it is but I think you'll get the point) about Sam Adams. When they first started out, Jim Cook had a recipe and idea but no brewery (I can completely identify with this scenario). He approached several large breweries and entered into a contract brewing arrangement with them. Since he was basically buying beer at a discount and reselling it, there was not a ton of profit involved. They made roughly $24 on every keg. Out of that $24, they spent $16 on advertising, leaving only $8 a keg for profit. While that may seem hardly worth it, I am sure he feels that it was today.

You have a great product, superlative customer service skills and you truly stand behind your products. I would not change one thing about any of your policies or business model with the single exception of the lack of advertising. I run into the same problem at work now...we have an awesome team, great delivery and a unique ability to keep all of this as quiet as humanly possible. It's rather frustrating...

Your business has a very low overhead. You don't rent a retail space or have employees to keep busy so I would look to supplement your personal income if necessary but would not "shutter" the JK Knives business unless for whatever reason you would like to exit the knifemaking biz for good. It's easy enough to continue an online presence and wait for orders to come in. I hope that's what happens!!!!!

Sean, not to steer this off topic, but that beer you had at the gathering was probably the best I ever had.

I'm sure this will be a good move for you. We can build a second core group over there.
