I've had this one for a while. Never seen another one like it.
No markings. Original owner purchased it in England over 30 years ago.

Edge is 4". Head is light in weight.
I am guessng the left side used to be flat like a chisel.
Original handle was straight.

A type of broad axe maybe?

Interesting piece, I have no idea other than it looks military to me. I'll be watching to see what the folks here have to say. If no one here knows, you should post pics on Bernard Levines ID forum.

Best regards

I does look like a hewing axe but it seems too light for that kind of work. I was wondering if it had a couple of uses like a hoe/ax combo. Looks like it was stamped out of heavy stock. Seems to me that it would have a patent for the design. If no one here knows definitively I would again suggest Bernard Levine, the man is a wealth of patent info.

looks like an inexpensive stamped version of what you see here in the States labelled as a shingle hatchet, or sometimes also called a carpenter's hatchet. it would have to be too light to be useful for hewing, I would think.

I saw something very similar to this and it was a SOD AXE, used to cut sod blocks or bricks to make a so house, so it is kind of a hoe only side ways. but that is my guess for what ever I know.

PS, just saw it is from england, maybe used for peat.

I was thinking along the same lines, hoe, sod cutter, peat cutter. I did a google for peat cutting axe and came up with this old auction list with a zillion pieces from tractors to tools and more tools. One of the tools is a peat cutter but can only guess which one it is. I think its the weird cresent shaped spade. Anyway, there are lots and lots of interesting tools, some axes, some really neat choppers for something. I sure wish I was at this sale. ;-) Have fun, it's worth checking out if you like old strange tools. http://www.wrightmanley.co.uk/agricultural-livestock/sale-catalogues/files/WEB CAT_1.pdf

Another thought. If you put a short dowel/haft through the eye just past the width of the eye and then a handle that attached to both ends of the dowel (just like the handle end of a shovel), you'd have a hoe. ;-)) The dowel would have to be pinned through that hole. Just thinkin.

by the way ; i saw an axe with same shaped blade but with an axe style eye on ebey and it was called a turf axe.

or it could be some type of an edging tool for your sidewalk from back in the day.

I didn't see the bend in it, or didn't recognize it anyway. As stated, thought it was a hewing, but probably too small for that. Might be though. Could be a multifunctional tool as well. Nice piece though. Never seen one.
