I've read that Buck will be bringing back some of the model knives that were produced in China. What percentage of Buck knives would you say are produced in the US?

CJ said at the BCCI meeting that 80% are US
now, and as models made overseas are discontinued, no more will be done so working towards 100% USA made! He admitted they get flack on the china ones in spite of overseeing the quality continuosly!

That is very good news and I like the direction they are going. :thumbup:

I think 80% is a conservative figure. I would lean more to the 90% range. All hunting knives are US made and allot of folders. I consider knives assembled in Mexico like the Bantom a US made knife. If all of the parts are made in the US and they are shipped to Mexico to be assembled, it's still US made parts.

This has been said before, but "bringing them back to the USA" isn't quite correct. I don't think that any of the made in China knives were ever made anywhere else.

When I think of " bringing them back to the USA" I think of this as the brand as a whole not necessarily a certain model number. I could be wrong but I bet most people who say this are meaning this as well.

I have for sale on another site a 379/373 trio set made in Cina, I assume those were previous American knives,, made in mass quantities for Canadian tire, so they went to china for tins and packaging cheap!

No, those were never US made, and always made in China, and yes made in China for cheap.

This was Chuck Buck's answer to that question in an interview on October 23, 2011;

Chuck Buck: "About 13 percent. Walmart, our largest account, wants price points around $9, $12, $15, and it’s pretty hard for us to do that here. Most of our Chinese-made products go to Walmart."

So in late 2011 87% were US made.

I back up respondents with there data as best as I know. Look at it this way guys, if it keeps Buck knife running, it employees folks around the US and Idaho. Living in semi-rural area you are currently forced to shop Wally at some time or another. Yes, I use small town stores when possible, but if a toilet float breaks on a Sunday Wally is about the only place you can turn to and not drive 65 miles round trip (in my case). I have about a half dozen made in China Bucks, all carefully chosen. I have gifted a few to kids as EDCs who likely will make them disappear at some point. Yes, just to save money. I am red, white and blue and will continue to be, I am giving Buck a little lee way so they stay in business and keep going into the future.

I hope the younger Generations start buying quality North American products. I'm in my early 30's and don't know anyone my age(outside of blade forums) that is crazy about quality knives. I go to Gun and knife shows and its mostly gray hairs. Maybe its just demographics..I hope.
