What Questions Should I ask my Surgeon?

LOLOL, I'm not being as hopeless or helpless as some may think here, just trying to get a good idea of what to expect - Post Surgery. ;) :D

I’m trying to think of questions to ask my surgeon before I go in for the surgery such as,

What kind of brace will I be wearing and for how long?

Will I be permitted to use our thin foam rubber cot mattress on the hospital bed the first night?

Will I have to put on my brace prior to getting out of bed?

And etc. If there are any you can suggest please let me know. The helluvit is I learned long, long, ago is that if I don’t type out a list, print it off, and hand carry it in I forget over half of the ones I wanted to ask and then they just go unanswered. I think the reason for that is having a 69 year old brain, or half a brain as some say, that's had all the powerful pain meds let alone the heart meds and some of the nasty stuff that I had to inject once a week before the Stills Disease went into remission run through it.  :( I know if I don't write my question's down pretty quickly after I think of 'em then they're gone forever and every once in a great while I feel some of them are very important. I won't add any suggestions to the list I've started here but they will be added to my Word Document that I've got started. ;) :D

Thanks in advance Gang!

What kind of home care will you need. i.e., can you shower, bathe, do you have to wear some kind of plastic\rubber to avoid getting the surgical site wet.

If your liver and kidneys are fine you should be ok w/ whatever meds you take. I don't know what you're currently on but i would ask if you will be adding any new ones to the list pre or post op? You may want to ask if you have to have any type of physical therapy or occupational therapy to help w/ every day living tasks? A lot of times there are studies done w/ hard numbers/percentages regarding other peoples recovery/response to the surgery. Sometimes it helps sometimes it doesn't help to know how others do. I wish I could be more help but that's all i can come up w/ right now.

What should I expect to experience post-op (e.g., what are they going to do to you after surgery)? How soon will we know whether my pain will be relieved? Are there any dietary restrictions I should follow? What physical therapy should I seek and when should I seek it post-op?

Do you have good mal-practice insurance?;):D

Thanks Gang!  Y'all came up with some questions I that I hadn't thought of and I have 11 on my list now. Keep 'Em Coming!!!! :D

Going off to add the new questions to my list....
I'll maybe cut 'em off at 25 if I get more than that, just depends on how bad I wanna know.;)
I've come to rely on this surgeon and if I had been able to go to him in the first place I wouldn't be in this mess I'm in.

Well ... the fundamental question is how much pain relief should you reasonably expect, and how much improvement to mobility and flexibility.

when can i use the sweat lodge again?

there is always the traditional:

Doctor, will i be able to play the piano after the operation?

if he says yes, the standard response is then:

funny, i couldn't play it before.... :)

if he says no, ask him 'why not?' - you may still get a chance to drop the punch line...

(thought we needed to lighten the tone a bit here.)

i am sure that you will come thru fine, and with just a tad of luck will be pain free, but make sure he answers any questions to your satisfaction before hand.

will there be much (more) scarring? will massages (by pretty young shield maidens of course) help heal and loosen up the scars and improve the muscle tone in your back? i've always been partial to massaging my scars with coconut oil. as noted, preferably by a female of the species.

some of the things i remember from my last operation, when will i be able to get up and pee/poo on my own (see also q. after next)? when will you take that d@mned tube out of my nose and the catheter out of my urethra? when will i be able to eat solid food? what's the menu like? can i have a beer?

Thanks Gang, y'all have been more help than you know! :D

I've probably got more questions than I need now. I was sorta kiddin around when I said, "I'll maybe cut 'em off at 25 if I get more than that, just depends on how bad I wanna know." but with what y'all, along with my family suggested, and those I came up with there are (25) twenty five. And with these questions I think I pretty well have everything covered don't y'all? ;) :D

If I can get these all answered satisfactory tomorrow then, "How long will it be after the Milogram and CT Scan before my surgeon will be able to determine if the surgery is doable and when can it be scheduled?" will become really important.
Then it will just be a matter of scheduling the surgery either between the kid's visits or after Thanksgiving. Hopefully it won't be that long with winter coming and all.
Seems like there's always something. :)

We know the food was excellent from the last three times I was there and if it's like the last time the nurses will all remember me, that is unless they've hired some new nurses and they're all super nice and pretty well competent and a few are even pretty as far as that goes.;)
