Yes Ray is very upset about loosing his shop. But he is also very concerned that he lost allot more...

The hay that caught on fire was the hay he just had cut and finally got in the barn to feed his cows over the winter, now no feed..

He lost his old 4X4 pickup he used to work on the ranch

he lost all his carpentry tools also chainsaws, his riding lawnmower, all his everyday take care of the house and ranch tools

so it wasnt just shop stuff that was lost.Basically it was his whole life besides the main house to live in.If you guys think about it.How many of you would lose more than the knifemaking equipment in the shop.I know for me I keep all my tools and everything that makes the man of the house the handyman he is.I would be totally devastated if this was to happen to me.We all say that our knife shop is just that our shop, but then we dont think how many times we fix something for the wife or kids in here or when something breaks down or we need to fix a faucet or something in the house,we head out to the shop to get the extension cords and saws or wrenches, even walk around the lawn mower in the corner without thinking about it.This is something we all should think about also, maybe a separete shop away from the knife shop, keep tools somewhere else,No we wont this is our life and the man zone, were men can do the things they need to do...How much more than knifemaking equipment would you loose if this was to happen to you?

I just figured since everybody was getting worried about their knife shops, they might take a look at just what is in their shops that they would loose,I have old tools handed down from my Gpa and other unreplaceable items in my shop as I bet allot of you do also..

So to those of you that are wondering how they could help ray,I am sure that there are allot of other ways to help him than just with the knifemaking equipment.Heck he doesnt even have a hammer and tape measure or skill saw to start rebuilding with..

Just had to get this off my chest, since I know Ray doesnt want to bother anyone else with the other stuff. He is very down harted at the present time and needs all the support and Prayers that we can manage.

When life hands you lemons... yeah, right. This really stinks. I sure hope Ray had plenty of insurance on everything. Of course, getting $1,000 for an old pickup or something won't get you a pickup to replace it. :grumpy: Man. Is there a plan or something we on the forum can do? I don't know if he's looking for $$$ donations, but on Wednesday my plate is clear (almost, poor Kim!) and I would be more than happy to work my butt off on a knife, sell it and turn the money over. That would be worth my time, and then some. What do you think?

Bruce, Who told you my truck had 4 wheels? The old beater is a total loss but really not much of a surprize. Old Blue was only used once a year for bringing in the hay. She went out in a blaze. I always hated putting gas in a vehicle that was worth more than the vehicle. I just got off the phone with the adjuster a bit ago and they won't make it out till tomorrow. I did go borrow a ball bearing from a friend and all 3 anvils have at least 3/4 bounce back and thats on a totally dead base. That makes me feel alot better. I'm having a hard time not being out in the shop. Thats the worst part.......

It's a bet.

You make it, I'll buy it. Anything to help out a little bit.

Ray,sounds like the anvils may have syrvived, that is great news....I know what you can do...Set one of the anvils in the middle of the shop(ashes) :D The gas forge may not need anything but have the lining put back in place and a new gas line and propane bottle hooked up then set it up and fire it up.Find one of those hammer heads and whittle out a handle from the closest tree branch you can grab, attach it to the hammer head..Now just reach down in the rubble and find a piece of steel and start forging something :D  ..Now get you wife to get a picture of you doing this and show everybody that a fire cant keep a great Bladesmith down...It would be a picture worth a million, just to see you at it again so soon....Bet you can completely finish you out a knife with nothing more than you hammer and anvil, plus a file to clean it up a little bit....I noticed a piece of the barn frame still standing, take a piece of the barn wood you can salvage even leaving some of the scorched marks on it for the handle....You could sell it for a fortune or keep it a s the blade you made from the ashes of dispare...

Just a idea to try and make you laugh and pick yourself up a little...

On a serious note we all need to really think of all the hand made jigs and fixtures we make to do certain aspects of our knifemaking, and how much time it will take to rebuild all of them, lots of things we take for granted everyday working in our shops that when any kind of disaster hits we dont even give a thought to...

Cockroachfarm, if you're serious about it, drop me an email. Unfortunately I wasn't using my brain and my entire family is coming up for a visit this weekend, so my shop time just got tanked, but I can see what I can do if we push things into next week a little... I want to get an official "That'd be cool" from Ray first, though. Some people aren't into this sort of thing, so if he's cool with it, then whether you want the knife or I stick it on Bladeforums, it'll sell, so it's no biggie who buys it.

Very sorry to hear about that... :(
I hope everythnig turns out okay in the long run.
