What rechargeable batteries are best?

I'm looking to find dependable and good quality rechargeable batteries, mostly for use in childrens toys and whatnot. I don't plan to spend 1000's over the course of years of toy use on regular batteries, and would like to know what you all feel is the best brand out there. I'll be looking to purchase mostly AA's and D cells. Thanks for any input, I greatly appreciate it.

eneloops or energizer with the white tops (rebranded eneloops). I use these in my kids toys and my camera gear, no issues at all. They aren't cheap, but they are quality.

Another vote for Eneloop.
I use them for electronics and lights and they're good performers.
They also hold a charge longer than most other brands.

Duracell pre charged rechargeables with the whites top's are re-branded eneloops as well. Their called Duraloops over on CFP.

Now energizer sells them as well now?. When did that happen?

To answer the OP's question: Eneloops and Duracell pre-charged rechargeables with the white top's that are made in Japan are the best to my knowledge.

I have been looking for 1.5V rechargeables. All the ones I have seen are 1.2V, not sure why, but they seem to work as well as the old throw away 1.5V

Bufford, heed fen's warning! Be careful there bro. Different voltage can wreck havoc on devices!!!

Yes, definitely the Eneloop batteries. I've experimented with numerious brands/types and they have performed the best. The Tech Support Team at Steripen when told me of all the various brands they've tested (and they do all day long) found Eneloop is a solid and reliable performer. First time I've heard about these White Top Duracells. Note to self: get some to test!

Google Duraloop.

If you get some to test make sure they are the white tops that are made in Japan.

The ones made in China are lesser quality then the ones made in Japan.

I have an Energizer AA charger with the white top Energizers. Will regular Eneloops work in this charger, or should I just look for the white top Energizers?

As far as charging is concerned, NiMH is NiMH so that charger will work fine either way. Also of note, while typical rechargables are rated at 1.2v as opposed to 1.5, this rating is a nominal voltage and NiMH rechargables (most AA) tend to exibit significantly less voltage drop under load than alkaline.

All AA NiMHs are 1.2 volts. Its a function of the chemistry and is unchangeable. All devices that use alkaline batteries (1.5 volts) can use NiMHs without any problems.

However (and this is the tricky part) lithium batteries are 1.6 volts and may void warranties on some battery powered devices. Most lithium batteries cannot be recharged.

Eneloop NiMHs are made with a new technology that enables them to hold a charge longer that the standard NiMH. Highly recommended.

I go to Costco for mine. The new ones are now blue/light blue bodies. They have the same rating as the white bodies but can hold the charges for longer and can be charged more times.
