What releases JB Weld?

I've heard that the only thing that will release JB Weld is heat. Anyone have any other suggestions that they have tried?--thanks, Dan

Dan, it partly depends on the materials the jb weld was used on. If one of the surfaces is smooth steel, shock or impact can make it release. What is it you're trying to take apart?

Like Michael said, if you don't have a good bond you can sometimes shear it off. If however you do have a good bond and you used slow curing JB Weld you will need heat and lots of it.

I once got some in my hair. A short soak in acetone took it right out. It had only partially cured, but it stands to reason that a longer immersion would at least soften the fully hard stuff.

Damn. I had plans for that idea. I JBwelded 1/4" glass onto my platen, and it's all crazed and chipped now. I guess I'll have to use a hammer and attach the new one with 2-ton epoxy.
Thanks for the info.

okay, okay, here's the reason for my question. About a year ago I had mated a nice piece of sambar onto a thunderforged damascus bird and trout blank supplied by a buddy. I know that JB Weld was used for the hidden tang. In short, with the drastic shortage of sambar stag, I was thinking of disassembling and reusing this sambar on another project.--Yep, I just thought that I could recycle a really nice piece of sambar onto a better blade (the world doesn't need many more letter openers).--Dan

Well....If you don't mind destroying or damaging the old blade, you could heat the blade tip and twist the handle with a pair of padded pliers until the bond breaks.

nope, I'm not concerning with destroying the blade, I want to preserve the sambar horn-thanks, Dan

Sounds like your best bet would be a jewelers saw, or maybe a band saw. Less risk of breaking the stag. I know JBweld saws just fine.

I know there is a embargo on sambar but it seems you can buy it everywhere. Dixie Gun worls has it as does Sheffields and many others. Is 10 or 15 bucks too much?

The Gov't of India allowed existing Sambar Stag orders to be filled after the Embargo was enacted. There is probably some in storage here and there, adding to the supply. Probably a trickle of black market Sambar Stag is coming out.

A big newcomer in the market is Red Stag from Europe, the quality seems highly variable, the outer rind more porous, the bark thinner, although it does look real good when a piece works for you.

Overall for Sambar Stag, the price has gone up, the quality down.

Many makers probably stockpiled some as well, rumor is some manufacturers did, although Case Knives now seems to be out.

just a thought ..
but couldnt you put the handle into boiling water?
i mean .. it depends on how the stag was when it was glued to .. and how it has been treated ..
but couldnt you soften the stag and therefore the JB weld wouldnt have anything to stick to ... giving you a moment to pull the blade out ...
???

like i said.. its just a thought .. :)
