What replaces a 2D cell MAG light?

What Surefires, and other flashlights, are as bright or brighter than a 2D cell MAG light, but smaller? All light suggestions are welcome, but Surefire especially is welcome. Thanks.

By the way, I'm asking for a friend. I already know which lights I want :)

My SureFire 6P blows away any MagLight made.
It has the 120 Lumen bulb assy in it. However, even with the standard 65 Lumen bulb assy, it's a tight, ring free beam that is better than all but the best MagLights.

I would recommend getting the SureFire E1.
It only uses one lithium photo battery and it has a much clearer perfectly round beam. It has a run time of 90 minutes, so it doesn't shine as long as the Mag, but overall it's worth is.

I just bought a Streamlight Scorpion. I don't know the "Lumens" rate on the bulb, but it has up to 6500 candlepower. It's less expensive than a Surefire, but it's certainly brighter than a Mag. It's about 4.9 inches in length and runs on two 3 volt lithium batteries.

Most of the Streamlight products and Surefire products will out shine a 2D Maglite.

Checkout the Streamlight Ultrastinger. Rechargable and a bright sucker with a good beam quality.

A cheap way to go is the PT Surge @ $25 or so. About the size of a 2 D light, it uses 8 AA batteries (you can use rechargable NiMH's, recharges 500+ times). Brighter than the 6 cell Maglites, per Bright Guy candlepower ratings.

What you might want to do is take a look at the SureFire E2 and/or E2e. These lights offer 60 lumens of light for 75 minutes. 60 lumens is considerably brighter than a 2D Mag. If the 75 minute runtime is not what you had hoped for, you can use the soon-to-be-released Low Output Lamp Assembly (LOLA) in the E2 or E2e that provides 25 lumens of light for a full two and a half hours of white, blinding light. 25 lumens is still much brighter than a 2D Mag and much whiter too; not to mention the great beam overall beam quality of the E2 and E2e.

Both the E2 and E2e are also considerably smaller and lighter than the standard Scorpion/6P sized lights. While being a bit heavier and bigger, the other SureFire 6V lights do offer 5 more lumens than the E2(e), but for 15 fewer minutes (60 minutes). The SureFire 6P and its derivatives are mainly meant as tactical lights, hence the 6P with the standard lamp assembly has a bright center spot with a generous surrounding corona of light. The Executive lights (E2 & E2e) on the other hand offer more of an utilitarian-style beam with a somewhat less bright center spot, but with a generally more useful larger overall beam. The Executive lights aimed more toward general civilian use.

The E2e is an improvement on the E2 and offers as upgrades: a pyrex lens, a lockout tailcap (although the very newest E2s have this too), increased waterproofness, a hex hezel to prevent rolling, and an improved pocket clip. Both models are offered in Type III hard anodizing (HA) which I would recommend. The HA resists scratches extremely well and is well worth the extra money.

Note: From the 2002 Catalog it appears as though the E2e in Satin Gray (Gunmetal) comes with a lexan lens. If you desire the pyrex lens, you must purchase a Hard Anodized E2e.

Ive got several mag-lites and a Streamlight Scorpion/I also have a Surefire Z2 combat Light. The Surefire blows the others away, the only Mag-Lite that comes close to being as briht as the Z2 is my Mag-Lite rechargeble. For the light output and size you cant beat a SureFire IMHO.

My pics are:

"Pricy" end of the spectrum = Surefire M2

"Less-pricy" end = Princeton Tec Tec-40, or Streamlight ProPolymer (4AA or 3C)...or if the ability to change from spot to flood is important, check out the Brinkman LX.

Thanks everyone. I think my friend chose the Surefire M2 Centurion! Nice pick, if you ask me. Myself, I lust after an 8NX and an E-1. One day, I shall have my Batman Utility Belt full of gadgets.

What replaces a 2D Maglite?

In my case...
a Surefire 6P for light...
... those ASP 21" batons look nice; but you aren't *permitted* to carry them in the UK[or I understand in many States of the Union]

6p or 6Z (better?!!)

Then get an M2 or M3......
those lites ROCK! I have a bunch................like about 8

batteries from botach................1.25 each!!! (when they have them...buy in bulk)

The E2 basically cured me of my flashlight addiction. I carry it everyday and rarely ever use any other light.

lol Clay..as I was reading the posts....I thought exactly the same thing. I went from light to light until I found the E2. Obviously the 6P with options is a really nice one too.., but the E2 meets just about any need I have.., and actually more considering the small size...
