What rod to use

I'm building a little twisting jig from some mild steel tubing and a couple of inexpensive cresent wrenches. The guy who's site I got the idea from suggested using "UTP-65" welding rods, because of the different alloys in the wrenches. Don't have any of that kind of rod anywhere in area, they even criss-crossed it and came up blank for a replacement. Any suggestions for doing this welding? There won't be a lot of stress on the welds, as I'll be using only about halve inch and smaller square laminated rods at almost welding heat when I twist. Then again, maybe there's more stress on the joints than I'm anticipating. Any suggestions? 6011's out of the loop entirely (I use them for anything and everything)?
Also: If any of you guys have pictures of your twisting jigs, I'd love to see them. I'm not commited to the design yet.

I've always welded wrenched with 7018 and had very good results. I have a two handed ratchet that has held for over 15 years.

wrenches are usually in the 1050 range.

Robert,

This is UTP's dissimilar material weld rod it is a modified 312 stainless.
Welco calls theirs Supermissle weld
Eutectic calls it 680
Bohler calls it 29-9a
All are modified 312's 120,000 tensile 95,000 yeild and 35% elongation
and all are kinda pricey
You could use a 309L stainless 100,000 tensile 90,000 yeild and 28% elongation alot less money with very similar results

My 2 cents

I use a 5-wgt rod for trout, but I've been known to use a 9-wgt for striper. :D :D :D

We're going to have to have you committed Jeffrey! Sweany, didn't mean to overlook your post, that's for the info on the 7018's also.
