Simply hated the cocobolo scales on this trapper. Ripped them off and started thinking of what to replace them with. My choices are rams horn, mammoth bone or some sort of wood like ipe or lions blood amboynia burl.

Rams horn is a favorite that I have a couple knives dressed in. Don't have anything with mammoth yet. Wood is always good but I'm leaning towards bone. Whaddaya think?

Mammoth bone is always interesting. Nothing like having something that has real history with a great knife to boot.

Having something that is 10,000 years old on your knife is appealing. The only trouble is selecting the right piece. Do you want light colors or dark, smooth, bark or fissures?

Well the traditional part of me says put some prettier wood scales back on her since that is what you just removed.. But, after giving it a little more thought, I decided to vote for the Rams horn.

Not only can they be very beautiful but extremely functional as well. I have been getting Rams horn scales on more and more of my custom knives and they are outstanding using scales. They get real "grippy" when my hand gets wet with blood or inclement weather.. And they take on a nice rich golden hue with a little age and use behind them.. Try it, you'll like it.:)

I like the rams horn a lot. My Rat-7 has rams horn scales.

I'm getting a Boker large sodbuster outfitted with some as well. It will need bolsters of some sort since the scales I got were too short to do the entire knife. Can't wait for it to come back from Australia.

I vote for mammoth bone. It's the best looking, IMO, and follows the reduce/reuse/recycle philosophy that I think should be adopted more often.
