Got me thinking - what would you guys pack into the field to rehone your favourite knife when its needed ? Or do you pack any sharpeners at all ?

Some of my personal ones have an EZELap diamond-coated sharpening stick strapped to the sheath, a few have small economy silicon carbide stones. I'll just mention that I use almost entirely carbon steel but have a few ATS-34 and my own RWL-34 knife. No super-steels...

Thanks in advance. Jason.

I usually carry two duofold DMT sharpeners: an extra coarse/coarse (black/blue) and a fine/extra fine (red/green). That way I can touch up mine, and reprofile the very dull knives that belong to other friends/family members who may be with me.

In the boonies I'd like one of the DMT duo-sharp items already mentioned. In the urban jungle though I carry an inexpensive DMT diamond stick that retracts into its handle (looks kinda like a pen.) It is super light, hides in my Maxpedition Thermite Versipack, and will put a good slicing edge back on my EDCs if they need it.

Like the others, I own several DMT Diafold Dual RED and GREEN sharpeners and usually pack one in the car or in my luggage for trips. Day to day, though, I have an EZE-LAP diamond hone that looks exactly like 1/2 a pen with a pocket clip. They've been around forever, easy to find and cheap to replace at @$4 a pop.

I've carried a Gatco Tri-Seps ceramic for touch-ups. I recently picked up a Spyderco Double-Stuff, medium stone on one side glued to a fine stone on the other, in a leather sheath. Very handy, and good for a nice edge on a knife that's not really dull. I have a diamond rod for reprofiling, that's old but fairly effective for small jobs.

A piece of 400 grid sandpaper glued to a wooden board. The other side of the board has a piece of chrome-polish saturated leather glued to it. Lighter than a stone and works perfect.

I carry a red DMT pocket hone, and a ceramic Gatco tri-hone. These cover most bases. For a badly dulled blade, the diamond file on my Leatherman Wave or PST-II works, too.

I carry a small Arkansas stone, but I also carry several extra sharp knives. I try to save the sharpening for when I get home.
