I'm retired, consequently I'm need to watch my expenses. I would like a decent sharpener / system, at a good price, probably under $75 dollars. What can you recommend.

Spyderco Sharpmaker will keep your blades super sharp but isn't particularly feasible for setting bevels.

Agreed, there is a small learning curve with it like any other system. I don't use it to reprofile. But I think I could with the diamonds and a lot of patients. It's quick efficient and can be transported easily

DMT coarse diamond stone, sharpmaker with extra fine rods, and strop. all can be had used for about 80.00

I'd vote for a guided system like the DMT Aligner or Lansky system. This way you can reprofile or attempt to match an angle that is not 15 or 20 degrees/side.

Good sharpening,
Dave

Other thread on home made gigs was an inspiration. Going to build my own later this week. Just need to pick up some stones. What do you recommend? 1000 and 6000 grit? What about something for a strop? Thanks everyone. Hope you all get to enjoy a great Thanksgiving.

home made V blocks that hold cheap bench stones for bevel setting. Then maybe a set of crock sticks to finish.
