What sharpeners do you use?

Just looking to see what sharpeners you guys and gals use when out and about in the woods. For years I brought a 3 set of DMT mini keychain sharpeners. However now I have decided that the Byrd Duckfoot is going with me from here on. It is very versatile, not light but not cumbersome, fine enough to put a working edge on nearly anything while being coarse enough to restore edges.

What do you bring with you- if anything?

I use ready to go 3" credit card size dmt diasharp diamond sharpeners, 325,600,1200 grit, they fit in an altoids tin, and I put velcro on the bottom side of them and use the top of the tin as a sharpening base......

Love the tin idea, I usuall carry diafolds myself but the tin idea might replace them.

Either a hand held DC4 stone as seen here: http://www.fallkniven.com/en/shop/details/369/13/sharpeners/dc4

....or a field version of a leather backed hone that fits in a zip lock sandwich bag as seen below.

This one is especially usefull when I take my GB mini :D

Kind regards

EZE lap diamond rod. It's about the size of a small pen. Does a great job. Sometimes I use a carbide scraper blade, which is more crude, but seems to work fine if you know how to use it.

I need some kind of good sharpener. I have bought so many and I cant get any of them to make my favorite knife to shave hair. I have a Spyderco Native in S30v and for some reason I just cant get it to shave hair. It cuts good enough but I have this thing about keeping my knives hair shaving sharp. Other than that, its the perfect pocket knife.

IMO,the two best sharpeners I've ever used are the EZE LAP Sportsmen diamond rod and the DMT two sided, fine/extra fine paddle sharpener. I strop on my pants.

currently, I am using an EdgePro Apex. Without a doubt, this is the best performing system I have ever used.

I still have my old Norton three stone oil bath set, and it has done yeoman like work for better then 30 years. It will still put a razor edge on a razor. The Edge Pro just works better, quicker, more consistently.

I usually carry a crock stick and a bulb filament for final touchup. This setup works well for me as I don't usually carry a large fixed blade.

I carry a Spyderco two-sided ceramic in a leather sheath. It's compact and it has both coarse and fine sides, so it can handle all but the most serious dings.

I rarely need to use it, though. It's more of a 'something to do while sitting around the campfire' thing.

All the best,

- Mike

I've got mostly Smith's and DMT bench stones (8" & 12") for stationary work but I've found absolutely nothing that beats the DMT Duo-Fold in the Fine/Coarse format for touching up a knife in the field...

I've used several different ones over the years, but once I got the fallkniven DC4 I knew I had the perfect field sharpener.

Both of the diafolds that I have purchased have lost large chunks of diamond off of them (one coarse, one fine). I have to send them in when I have some money not going to bills. I have used DMT for years and this is the first time that I have had chunks taken off (It is not wearing down of diamonds- they can't take an oxide layer off of scrap steel let alone sharpen hardened steel).

Thank you for the replies all.

I SUCK at knife sharpening so I use one of these. It gets my knives functionally sharp but not hair shaving sharp.

I usually take a couple pieces of sandpaper, and a ceramic rod. If it takes more then that, it can wait until I get home.
