This may have already been discussed, but opinions change, and I thought it may be interesting.

The years forum knife got me thinking on shields. (Bow tie vs short bomb :D)

I know some do not like the cloud shield at all, while others do. One, I am personally tired of is the UN-X-LD stamped shield.

What I am interested in hearing is what shield goes best on what pattern in you opinion.

For example, I don't know the name of this shield, but I think it goes perfectly on the 48 pattern.

So do you all have a favorite shield for a certain pattern or two?

In my opinion, all the answers are in the "old knives" and "old catalogs" threads stickied at the top of the forum.

There are some that seem to approach the same question with more of an interior decorating or accessorizing perspective, instead of a historical perspective. It's like picking out earrings. There seems to be more folks with this type of interest than there were previous years. Personal taste is just personal taste. There's no way to account for it.

This is how I feel about the cloud and hotdog shields. ;)

Very interesting thread, is that not a Hound's Tooth type shield as seen on the 55 and last year's Forum Knife??

Congress needs a Bar type, Swell End or Teardrops Gimp/Bowtie or Longbomb, Serp looks nice with a Diamond, Barlows should NOT have a shield or an engraved bolster only stamped or plain, Equal End Hotdog or Bar type. Some people allege that Stag should have no shield, don't agree there but it must be inlet well (tricky!)

Over to the rest of you.

It's called the "Hounds Tooth" and was debuted on the 55 pattern.

Doh! I knew that. Lack of sleep due to a new born has fried the brain. :D

Thanks Bob for the reminder.

I'm drawn to symmetry, and this banner shield on the congress knives is just perfect in my eyes.

I think an oval shield looks perfect on the swayback pattern.

I like badge and /or federal on square bolster serpentine frame .Ive heard it called "premium" also

Couldn't agree more with you on the Houndstooth shield on that improved trapper no. 48. It flows perfectly with the svelte blackwood covers. Probably my favourite shield for any dogleg pattern as bob stated how it debuted on the 55 Houndstooth

From many custom Dogleg Patterns I've seen, a slim rounded bar shield seems to work best to not draw away from the organic curvature of the dogleg itself, that or a dog's head shield would be just as fitting.

I'm not sure of the name for this shield. Some call it a "sowbelly shield" since it was often on that pattern. Some call it a "swimsuit", "barbie" or "bodice".

There are some that fit certain patterns better than others.

Not all patterns look right with the bar, but the ones that do are some greats.

I like the cloud/keyhole shield on the 99 Wallstreet. But would prefer no shield at all and no blade etch

The arrowhead shield is just about perfect on the Indian River Jack or any Northwoods knife for that matter.
But again, would prefer no shield at all ... and no stamp(s) on the pocket slip either.
