I have $180 dollars from my birthday and Im looking to buy a folder. I am looking into some Emersons, Benchmades, and a Spyderco. You guys have any ideas of a folder I should buy? (Weight and size dosent matter)

In all seriousness, I recommend the Dpx Hest 2.0 Folder:

Depends on what you already have and what style/size you're into. My top three current favorites in that price range Paramilitary 2, Manix 2 XL, and Benchmade 810 Contego.

In that range I would recommend a ZT 550 (I managed to get one for $175), a Spyderco Paramilitary or Sage 2 or Benchmade 940 or Adamas.

If I had 180 bucks to blow and were in your shoes I'd purchase (this is pretty off the wall) a Kershaw JYD II 2.2 with the composite blade, Spyderco FFG (insert favorite color here)FRN Delica, a Ka-Bar Bob Dozier Spearpoint Hunter and an Opinel number 08. IMO with that set up you'd have a pretty decent selection of EDC folders. Unless you plan on making an exstensive camping or hunting trip in the near future I'd hold of on the fixed blades for a while and focus on practical EDC knives for now (with that being said there are a number of EDCable fixed blades such as the ESEE Izula, Swamp Rat Swamp Warden and Becker Bk11).

How will you be using it? I might think about a Benchmade mini-Griptillian plus a Spyderco Chapparal...but only because those are two of my favorites.

I have a ZT 0550. I like it. But it is quite big and heavy-duty. If you want that and can carry it EDC, that's fine. However, you might prefer a Hest 2.0 or a Spyderco Paramilitary2 (my all-time favorite).
I also highly reco one of the Emerson's with the Wave feature; opens as you bring it out of your pocket. I have a CQC-7; great knife.

I just got a ZT 0551 ... and I highly recommend looking into the ZT 0550.
Also some other great EDC blades:
Spyderco Chokwe
Spyderco Sage 2
Spyderco Para2
Spyderco Manix 2 + something else awesome.

Actually.. you could pick up a Para2 + Manix 2.

Which is a great EDC duo.

Get the Hogue EX01. EXTREMELY underrated. Just got one today and it's amazing. All for about $140. It's the only knife i've ever seen that comes with a mirror polished edge.

Just a note of 'caution';

I would think carefully about HEST (or even reconsider). With all due respect to those who recommended it - my version does not seem capable of withstanding real use. I'm not talking about battoning, pounding on it, etc. Mine developed vertical bladeplay with minimal use.

I was trying to decide between the 0550 and the HEST. I went with the HEST for the smaller dimensions (which I still like) but suffice it to say, I have now ordered an 0550...

Just my experience,

Ben

If your HEST has blade play, send it back. They will send you a new one. I have had mine in my pocket fir a couple months now and it has done very well, no problems whatsoever. The few that develope blade problems are not the norm. It also makes a difference between V1 and the 2.0. The 1.0 was plagued with wiggle problems but the 2.0 has most of them ironed out. My 2.0 gets more pocket time than anything else.

You can also look at the Citadel Deimos, Spyderco Valleton, Combative Edge M1- although I think they raised the price on that one.

Agreed, the HEST 2.0 version is much better then the 1st but I stilhavece heard problems with it, but who knows what they are doing with the folder. Throwing at trees? haha some of my good friends to some dumb things with their knives in general. I have one and it holds up well but I also have fixed blades that I often will move to when a folder is not the right choice. I should mention that bc is a tough knife it not the smoothest flip out or easy unlock, but then again thats how they designed the knife. Depends on what you are looking to do with the folder.

In that price range and from those makers I like the benchmade barrage 851, great looking and M390 steel. Good size and factory edge (not that that means anything), assisted open. Not bad and something different.
