Hey, need to hear some input from others on this. This is a great knife, great action, perfect shape, excellent mechanics. I love how it sits deep in the handle when closed and the blade shape is perfect. I just cant stand the lightning strike carbon fiber. I though about building a new knife around the blade a spring myself but fear it wouldn't get done right or at all. Does anyone know who might be able and willing to do this? Give it liners, bolsters and stag covers. Is it a bad idea? disrespectful maybe? I think it would be wonderful if done right.

i'm probably not one who should comment, but maybe you could trade it for something you like better or sell it to someone who likes it as is? It seems to me that if you have someone else do the custom work, it will cost way more than you paid for the knife, but I might be wrong. Your post is an excellent recommendation to someone who wants this particular knife. If cost isn't a consideration and you decide to have custom work done, I would never say it's disrespectful. It just makes it PERSONAL. :)

Thanks that's a good way of looking at it. It's been for sale for quite some time. I get the impression nobody cares for the handle material. But the same knife with bolsters and stag would be amazing. make it a tribute to Mr. Howser

Nice! I think if you can do a custom within your budget, it would become your favorite knife based on your comments. Not only personal, but unique!

I understand that you can't ask the maker to do the modifications because he's deceased. It's also your knife to do with as you please. You're not happy with it and it isn't selling so why not turn it into a knife that you are happy with? I get it.

You asked if it might be disrespectful. I've been chewing on that ever since you posted and my gut keeps telling me that the answer is yes. The knife is a work of art crafted by a man who was passionate about his work. If he can't modify it then I feel that it should remain in its original state.

You've got a mighty fine knife there. If it were mine I would find a way to enjoy it as is.

I'm feel that way to, that's why I'm fishing for input from others. It is a well made knife. Lightning strike carbon fiber is peculiar stuff. The wires continually seem to pop out making the surface rough. You rub them off and before to long there's more. Haha. I'm not sure what to do. I know if I sell it I will lose a couple hundred for certain. But if a mod was done well it would be worth the money and make that Howser 1306 shine.

I understand not liking the scales. But I'd sell it and get one made to my specs before I tore that one up. I don't see changing that one as a win.

Maybe find someone who will trade it for a version you like?

I was sitting here looking at it , imagining the maker putting it together and polishing it up and changed my mind. I reckon I'm gonna stick it in the drawer for now. I collect bullet lockbacks and good luck finding another like it.. it is surprisingly strong for being so light. Maybe it's the lack of heft that turns me off on it. But the way he has the blade tucked in deep when closed is the best I've seen.

The 'rebuild' you propose - adding bolster, giving it liners, changing spring, putting on Stag scales is actually making an entire new knife  The whole point of linerless knives is to reduce weight yet not at the cost of strength. I understand you may not like the scale material but you could trade it for a knife you like, I'm certain there are people out there who would like to get hold of your knife as it is:)
