Hello, everyone. I have a question, and no doubt, its going to be a LONG winding road to the question. So if you all have been following my updates, (if not, if you lost your eyes already, my condolences, and I understand, blindness is quite enough to be getting on with without me pestering you), oh forget it, I'll tell you all anyway. I have been preoccupied by looking for a crowbar to use on my 'oh so lovely' patch of bamboo stumps out in the back of the yard, 'cause dear Dad wants it done quick. But, I came across something cooler than a useful crowbar while searching dear Dad's basement of doom.
I found a piece of metal about the size, lengthwise and thick-wise, as a regular kubotan. It has serious heft to it, IS ferrous unless my Dad found and horde-ed from Area 51 a piece of alien metal that rusts yet is not ferrous, and it piques my curiosity. I am no good at telling metal from metal by spark test, seeing as I have never done it before, and know nothing of what to look for, and I am really quite sure that XRF metal analyzing guns are slightly out of my price range
.
But yeah, all winking aside, I am planning on hand making this piece of metal into a...pen. Yes a pen, an extraordinary pen...so the question is, is there a cheap simple kit I could buy that would tell me what kind of metal I am working with here? I don't want to take a hand file of tempered high carbon steel to this without knowing I can reduce it safely, or efficiently, or without ruining my file.... Well, I look forward to responses, and if I get none, I'll know you all tried your best and could not find any useful information. Thanks, and peace.
David
