What Should I Do

I recently got a knife as a present, and I love the overall design of it. But there is one problem, it's a cheapie so the steel if very sub-par. I want to EDC it, but it's pointless with the cheap steel. So i looked around online for a better grade knife that had a simlar style but have been unable to find one close enough for my liking. Today the idea hit me to possible see about getting someone to make a better blade for me with the same design. And finally here's my question, do you think it would be better to just have someone make a better blade or to go ahead and just have the whole knife remade?

Is this a trick question or something?

The answer is either keep that knife sharp and carry it until it's not safe anymore, unless it's unsafe now. Then either buy a safe EDC now or when the "cheapie" is unsafe to use.

You can get a VERY good and safe folder from the best companies in the business today for well under $40. Building upon or "improving" on a bad foundation or design is not cost effective. In fact that entire notion is pointless and doesn't make any sense whatsoever . . .

Do you need/want to carry the knife in order to make the giver feel like the gift was appreciated?

If so, just sharpen it and carry it. Carry it as a backup. Carry it in the car. Carry it in a tackle box. But use it, and let the giver see you use it from time to time.

I would not go to the expense of having it duplicated, unless you just want to drop some serious cash.

What is the knife? Do you have a picture?

Cheapie Chinese clones are often duplicates of a more expensive U.S. production original. Someone here might be able to identify a very similar production knife with better materials and tolerances.

I say keep it as a wall hanger and get a real knife for edc. Replacing a blade on a cheap ass knife is a waste of time and money. Keeping it lets the person who gave it to you know that you appreciate the gift.

LOL!:D:D:D That stuck my funnybone just right. Maybe it was your timing.

Always carry the knife to gatherings of family and friends.

Other than that... move on.

I believe you have messed my point, which I'll take the blame for, i never have been good at expressing my thoughts.

I have tried keeping it sharp, but it simply does not hold an acceptable edge long enough to warrant carrying it.
And yes I can get a VERY good and safe folder for a reasonable price, I own several of those type knifes and they are great.
The thing is that this knife is, excluding the blade steel, my favorite knife I have ever owned. It's hard to explain why i like it so much, but there is just something about it. It's the first knife I have had that i find excuses to use.

I hope I have better expressed my point of view this time around.

The problem is, if the steel is crap, there is a VERY high chance that everything about the knife is of low quality. Meaning that if you were to switch the blade, the lock and general reliability would still be in question.

i got a cheap kershaw barrage that i got from walmart for like 30$ so far it's razor sharp built very sturdy and so far no problems with it.

it's an easy knife to carry if u want something small. it's not AO though.

That was my point ;)

What is the name and model of this knife or post a picture - I'm sure we can all come up with a few alternatives to this knife and close to the same style or design unless it's just one of a kind . . .

I have always had trouble posting pictures on this site, my computer just doesn't seem like it, always shuts down on me.
But if you like I can e-mail you a picture of the knife

Upload the picture to a free image hosting site (such as photobucket) and then link the picture here on the forums. I'm sure these guys could find a similar knife that is of better quality if they just had a picture or two to go by :)
